Dennis Clegg is in his thirties and lives in a halfway house for the mentally ill in London. Dennis, nicknamed "Spider" by his mother has been institutionalized with acute schizophrenia for some 20 years. He has never truly recovered, however, and as the story progresses we vicariously experience his increasingly fragile grip on reality.

I have read some comments from other members about this film and, often,
words and phrases as pretentious, boring, boring, lacking
entertainment are used. All comments fair, is definitely not a movie
fantastic for an exhilarating experience escapist - however, I would suggest that
a little effort on the part of spectator
pay big dividends.
The first thing to say is that the plot of the movie is not the
main objective of the film. This has to do with madness and subtle
questions posed and the need to be held in his mind throughout the process.
Each scenario offers vital information, but do not forget that we are seeing
within 30 or 40 years old, the memories of a man who has spent most of his
life in a mental asylum. I advised not to take any scene
face value, particularly those flashbacks.
It is a difficult film and may appear at first to lack of consistency, or
art for the sake of it. However, like the jigsaws
appearing in the film in its various forms is the end of pieces that are the hardest to treat
and potentially the most dangerous.
And at the end leaves us with a question - is the Spider trauma
the cause of their madness, or his madness is the cause of trauma.
I've been lucky enough to see a projection of this in Queens, where
David Cronenberg talks about the film afterward. He can be the smartest
filmmaker working today. This is an incredibly complex
film, with many levels of interpretation and
ambiguity, that most films offer a large audience. The
is top quality and worthy of Oscars in a literal sense, not a bull ***
Hollywood sense, the composition of vaccines is beautiful;
history is impeccable and participation; design Production is perfect -
I could go on, but you get the picture.
What is so unfortunate many critics are discussing this film as
one on schizophrenia, which really is not, nor is intended to be
. As a result, is an excellent representation of
schizophrenic experience. But Cronenberg intended to be
representation of the human condition, with all its mysteries,
existential anxieties and uncertainties. What was never a
uncertainty, however, is Cronenberg's skillful mastery of delivery
genius.
