I've seen this movie over the weekend at the Festival of Philadelphia World Cinema
and I thought it was fantastic. Intelligently written,
amazingly well for someone who directed his feature film debut with a game cast

name actors and impressive new faces - so bad you can not find a good distributor
. It deserves to find a larger audience (and if given the opportunity

s).
Firstly, the greatest obstacle to appreciate and enjoy this movie
is the fact that the title alone will keep away from most people's hands
. Let's face it, when the average viewer discerns that browsing the local shops
video comes across a call `
How To Kill Your Neighbor's Dog, 'without delay shuffled into the mental mindbox
right next obtuse such as tariff and consummately repugnant
forgettable "Surf Nazis must die ', (which, incidentally, is a title that never thought that
exposes question of my scope for any reason, but
what happens to work here) or similar. I mean, slapping on such
designation is like insisting on a strike three attempts with the first launch
when you're the batter. Moreover, it must be said about old
to judge a movie by its cover. Take Office Space "," for example, that in a million years
would have expected something so funny and insightful
Mike Judge, the man who gave the world Beavis and Butthead, to mourn aloud?
(However, in retrospect, Beavis and Butthead was not half bad ...). The point
ie, the writer / director Michael Kalesniko made himself a great disservice with
its title, which may have been a shock value attempt to capture the attention that some
not actually work . But if he can overcome what for most
undoubtedly is a measure understandable, prejudice against it, he will try to
. And ultimately, noted the desirability of
not dismiss any film outside of his hand.

Hollywood Deniz Peter McGowan (Kenneth Branagh) is a success
playwright, but in the show biz tradition of `What have you done for me lately
? "'re having trouble getting his latest book to a running start
. Trials have begun, but director Brian Sellars (
David Krumholtz) can not seem to find the magic. Peter and poor is experiencing heavy
writer's block that success is preventing him fixing it, and
working outside their home does not seem to be the answer. Wife Melanie (Robin Wright Penn
) is supportive, but do not have children themselves, and
under their natural maternal instinct, which has taken eight years of age
Amy Walsh (Suzi Hofrichter), daughter of the new neighbor and single mother
Trina (Lucinda Jenney), to babysit. Apart from that there is a "false Peter '
(Jared Harris) roaming about the neighborhood, a fan, it seems, has
taken on the identity of Peter, and to top everything, neighbor's dog just
not stop barking. Suffice it to say Peter is not seeing the world through glasses
pink these days, but there must be a response to his numerous
and many dilemmas, now all you have to do is find it. Perhaps

sabotage his own movie with a title that instantly relegated to
`cult 'status Kalesniko is the way to go into his alter-ego of the skin and the
Peter and his exploration of possible reactions dilemma. And if this is the
case, it worked. Because once you give this film a chance, you will find that
is amusing, poignant and, indeed, some full of clever ideas rather
and observations on the human condition. This is a black comedy / drama,
to be sure, but in the heart of the film is a dramatic story that
evoke no small amount of empathy and compassion on the part of the hearing. What is
say with this movie you get much more than what you negotiated, but
decidedly is not what you're expecting based on the title alone.
There are a couple of cases in which Kalesniko succumbs to some unnecessary
low compared humour, but not enough to distort the whole. After all, this movie
plunges deep into the pockets of human nature to extract the kind of feelings
(without being sentimental) are rarely found in a film of this genre
, and makes a positive and lasting impression.

The role of a transplanted Brit insomne playwright with writer's block
must have seemed like a character in a dream for Kenneth Branagh, who
totally immerses himself in Peter and comes with a winner and
memorable image. The character is obviously well written to begin with, but
Branagh takes hold of the piece and run with it, so it is entirely their own
lending the kind of nuance and depth to really takes Peter
life. The development of character is done well, too, as
Initially, Peter is a guy that is not necessarily likable, with peculiarities and
peccadilloes aplenty. But as the story progresses, so does Peter, and
there are some tender moments along the way that are quite unexpected, given
attitude and start taking Peter out. And how
Branagh brings about his character that makes it work, but instead of
evolves from a sudden left out of thin air. Peter finally has a
`progress', and this is a place that is wholly unexpected.
It's a solid performance, and one of the rewards that come from
successfully navigate the past Kalesniko questionable title.

Robin Wright Penn is also impressive in his role as Melanie, although it is not too
of a section of his art. But it is one of those simple
`normal 'characters who seem so easy to play
are often taken for granted (Easy What he among you who has acted in front of a camera without looking
Once to cast the first stone). The real find here
, however, is the youngest Hofrichter, who is beloved and totally
effective as Amy, a girl with their own challenges to overcome
.

The supporting cast includes Lynn Redgrave (Edna), Peter Riegert (Larry),
Johnathon Schaech (Adam), Derek Kellock (Amy's Father) and
Peri Gilpin (Debra ). It passes this film is like ordering a hamburger and
filet mignon served for the same price, and what makes "How to kill his
Neighbor's Dog 'depth and meet compliance cinematic experience.
Give it a chance. 8 / 10.
