Cookie's Fortune unfolds over an eventful Easter weekend in the small town of Holly Springs, Mississippi. The town residents are peaceful, kind folk--with the exception of Camille Dixon (Glenn Close)--a pushy theatre director with an incredibly shy younger sister, Cora (Julianne Moore), whose estranged daughter Emma (Liv Tyler) has just returned to town. On the heels of her latest play, Camille is shocked to discover that her Aunt Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal) has committed suicide. Terrified at the thought of how this will tarnish the family name, she eats the suicide note to make it look like a burglary. This set-up leads the police to one main suspect, Willis Richland (Charles S. Dutton), who also happens to be Cookie's best friend. Although the rest of the town is convinced Willis didn't commit the crime, an outside investigator (Courtney B. Vance) isn't so sure. As Easter Sunday and opening night of the play arrive, the truth comes out, revealing more secrets than anyone could have possibly imagined. Director Altman tells his story at a leisurely pace, beautifully recreating the eccentricities of small town life in this sweet-natured tale.

Cookie shoots herself. Glenn Close discovers the body and suicide note.
Being a theatre director, she decides not to do ... She invents a
scenario for how a thief could have killed her. What she did not expect
was for the police to find a suspect ...
Everything is completely fair right to Cookie. The atmosphere really gels,
the cast is cohesive, the plot is interesting and its implications on subtextual
suicide is also fascinating. His reality, a film that Altman
feel like exploring. The amateur production of Salome
community is to make one of its most interesting devices. It makes you think of
rhythms that run through the film, suicide and
human existence.
Moreover, Glenn Close being a theatre director, and bring knowledge
in everyday life, rather to extreme measures in the movie, is an interesting subtext
- comment the principal author as
God.
Altman regular themes of small town and the climate is here - the weather
once again reminds us of a larger force that we have no control
.
I thought it was a fascinating, fun movie. I laughed out loud many times
- especially in something funny little aspects of the characters. What is the reason that such
was a pleasant surprise that Cookie's Fortune was not only a pleasant
movie, its really a great truth.
10/10. One of the best Altman, and my favorites so far.
Robert Altman has an affinity for the South, and "Cookie's Fortune", reveals that
is soft, pleasant and relaxed. Located in small town Mississippi
there are none of the typical Hollywood stereotypes inflamed racial hatred,
sexual oppression, fanaticism and class. Well, not much, at least. The
characters in Holly Springs and we all know one another
regardless of their race and social status. Well acted by a large body which issued
represent an "Altmanesque" kaleidoscope of small-town characters, most of whom are
eccentric. The plot revolves around the suicide of Cookie, a
matriarch of one of the leaders in the city families. Given that suicide is considered shameful
, two of his nieces, to discover his body, covering up
are seen as a murder. And then an innocent man becomes the first suspect
and outside ... we go. Ok, so it's not as' grave ', since many of
Altman films, or so dark either. But that's not bad, and "Cookie's Fortune" is a very fun movie
. I highly recommend for a Saturday night
rent.
