While in the burial of Countess Torlato-Favrini, her friend Harry Dawes and her acquaintance Oscar Muldoon recalls parts of her past. When the wealthy Kirk Edwards hires director and screenplay writer Harry Dawes, they travel to Spain with the public relations Oscar Muldoon to see the dancer of a nightclub Maria Vargas and invite her for an audition, since they need a new face for their next movie. Maria, a naive woman with simple origins, is convinced by Harry to go to Hollywood and becomes a famous star and a close friend of Harry and his girlfriend Jerry. Along her successful career, Maria lives personal dramas including lack of adaptation for her new lifestyle, is unable to love and is disputed by the powerful millionaires Kirk Edwards and Alberto Bravano. When she meets the noble and handsome Count Vincenzo Torlato-Favrini in the French Riviera, she believes that she found her prince charming and her life becomes a fairy tale. But after the wedding, she sees that her Cinderella's castle of dreams has become a pumpkin.

Whenever I felt that if Humphrey Bogart had not died in 1957 he
se han ido left a leadership role of his great movies to pick
very juicy character roles, and the film convinced that it is
The Contessa barefoot. His Harry Dawes is not the hero of this tragedy
- There is no hero, only a heroine who loses everything. Harry is his closest confidante and guide
, for he sees the talent that makes
Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner), the great film star becomes her, but she realizes she is
very real and good person - but a terribly naive to all those who
in a corrupt world. This is Harry's sad duty not only to help tell the audience
of history, but to watch (one might say inevitably) Maria
destroy itself.
Harry is one of the people that the rich control freak
Kirk Edwards (Warren Stevens) is available because they are in the beams. Harry
had drinking problems, and his career as a film director is in the
toilet. Edwards has found Mary in the slums of Madrid, and
she believes has great potential. He wants to direct its Harry in a film test,
just to be sure. Harry has little choice, and makes the test - but he
gets to know Mary and win their confidence. And to find a way to somehow make their work
Edwards, but give Maria a chance to not be under
Edwards iron glove control.

All of Joseph Mankiewicz films are literate - that is arguably the most
verbally careful of all the great film directors. Some find the path that
THE Barefoot Contessa May lost too far because the dialog
(most of the film is the story during a funeral). But he is still
some very effective scenes in. The clash between Edwards, a humorless
example of the Puritan work ethic, and Bravano (which for all its faults
is honest about his money and enjoy
position to appreciate life) at a party is a great peak. Therefore, it is a minor
time as when a royal pretender to a throne he tragically
accurate comparison between him and Torlatto - Favrini. So stick to
that dialogue - that it's worth.

movie fame and fortune to win in happiness.
Final note: Mankiewicz apparently can not avoid having a small
joke at the expense of his audience. When we see Mary the first film,
marquee is a sign that mentions is the screenplay for "
Lloyd Richards." "Lloyd Richards (Hugh Marlowe) was the playwright who wrote plays for
Margo Channing and Eve Harrington in the classic Tod Mankiewicz

can offer a woman who nonetheless always value to things simpler
life. Even INAT with her beauty and cunning uncommon, to the detriment Maria

increases accordingly. Impeccably well cast, this is actually a series of films.
Gardner is luminous as Mary, although she is not solely dependent on her
looks to carry the film - she gives an actual performance. Bogart is stalwart
and sympathetic as Maria guard. And O'Brien, in an Academy Award Winner
in turn, is Sly and oily as the only one who thought that the publicist
changing loyalties as often as sweat soaked his shirt. Lensed of large
Jack Cardiff and largely shot in Italy, the European environment, as well as
snappy dialogue, boost the credibility of the premise
a notch or two above many others so-called revelations of Hollywood and excess
claim.
