40 years ago, Don Haskins went on the recruiting trail to find the best talent in the land, black or white. 7 blacks and 5 whites made up the legendary 1965-66 Texas Western Miners. They were mocked and ridiculed for their showboating and flaunting of black players on the court. Yet, in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, Haskins and his Miners came together as a team united to reach the National Championship game against powerhouse Kentucky.

The true story of Texas Western University Miners (now called the
University of Texas at El Paso) who defied all odds in 1966 by NCA
be the first basketball team to start five African-American players
(led by Derek Luke, "Antwone Fisher" and Mehchad Brooks, "
Desperate Housewives" fame) and eventually win the national championship. New
coach Don Haskins (played superbly by Josh Lucas, one of the most
low rating actors in the movies right now) is having trouble recruiting the

Glory Road is a very entertaining film if it is going to ignore his
many inaccuracies. The film would make the viewer thinks
Coach Haskins came to TWC and hired a national championship caliber team
in his first year as a collegiate coach. The truth is that Coach Haskins has been in
TWC for 3 or 4 years before the national championship
year and already had several black players to
TWC including Nolan Richardson. Haskins also hired Jim Barnes
before the championship year and the teams playing on
Barnes may have been better if the team championship.
The film also take too many liberties with the games that were played during the championship
year. The first game of the year is not a nail
bit as the film shows, but nearly 50 point blowout. The film shows
Iowa that led TWC most of the game. The Iowa game was never close and
certainly was not the buzzer beater. The fact is that TWC
only played a handful of games that were close that year, especially against
New Mexico and then the NCA Tournament against Cincy and Kansas.
The most disappointing proven inaccuracy in the film
was the last game against Kentucky. Kentucky led only briefly in the game and had as much as TWC
11 point lead in the 2 nd half. TWC was not behind when
Bobby Joe Hill stole the ball twice in the first half. The two steals
TWC allowed to extend their lead to 5 points and set the tone for the rest of the game
. I know that producers of the film had to have a more exciting finish
to keep the audience excited but truth is that the game was never in doubt
. If anyone has seen the real game film that
there, you'll see a bad offensive game played by both teams and
an outstanding defensive effort by TWC. The film should have paid more
time in coach Haskins' three guards strategy to counter the fast break offense
Kentucky.
Glory Road "is an inspirational movie but not a film
very accurate if you know the history of TWC. Watch the film if you want to see a good film
idea but not if you're looking for sports event.
