Freddy Benson, a con(fidence) man, lives off women by waking their compassion with shocking stories about his fake fate. One day in beautiful Beaumont sur Mer, he meets Lawrence Jamieson, who shares the same passion, works the rich ladies with the same scheme, but in quite a different league. With the knowledge of his profession, Freddy forces Lawrence to teach him high-society behaviour, so that he himself can earn a major living. When time comes to say goodbye, Freddy decides to stay a little longer. As there is no way two con men can work a town that small at the same time, Lawrence and Freddy agree on a settlement: The first one to extract $50.000 from a young female target wins, the other leaves town. The sum is no match for Lawrence, the age of the lady no match for Freddy. Let the games begin!

Director Frank Oz landed the dream team of comedy heaven when
Steve Martin and Michael Caine signed to star in this hilarious comedy of manners and
Mannerisms, `Dirty Rotten Scoundrels', a film that succeeds
be entertaining without being offensive in any way, and some features
terrible
and actions - filmed on location in the French Riviera - some
beautiful cinematography by Michael Ballhaus. Manufactured in 1988, this film has not only
well, but seems so refreshing after a decade of `American Pies" and another
for example with a fee witless, `forgettable talent & # 39; after another.
It is a reminder that the true comedy can have the sophistication, without necessarily being
sophisticated, and that the real humor is timeless. These are things that are good
when it became, is even better today, and will have you laughing even harder than

Freddy Benson (Martin) is a small time con man americas / aspiring Gigolo

and undoubtedly, is the audience.
Oz must have had a good time making this movie, because he had all the tools available to him
the best of both worlds. There is broad,
physical humor and perfectly delivered by Martin employee, and subtle,
studied approach used by Caine. Their styles contrast wonderfully, and
Oz
certainly makes the most of it. The gathering is that some scenes are
beyond hilarious, like Lawrence that attempts mentoring Freddy
in the art of being soft and sophisticated, or when - as part of a scam --
Freddy is on the role of `Ruprecht," Lawrence of incorrigible, moronic
brother. It is in these scenes that seemed to Oz Martin, especially
some free rein, and the rewards are considerable. And this is definitely a
joint effort by the two stars; Martin is fun, but it's Caine's
response to what really makes it work. It also shows that Oz
knows his territory, and proceed accordingly.
Caine gives a performance featuring Jamieson as the epitome of charm
and experience in the great tradition of people like David Niven and
Cary Grant. This is a good operator, and the fact that he lives by a
`personal code" that lets you Bilko only the very rich (and only if they
`deserve '), you allows like him and for what it is. The
is not a guy who is going to leave a mark which sells furniture of the family car and to invest in
one of its systems called him a man with scruples. And he
Caine plays to perfection.
Martin, however, is that really gets to cut loose in the role of Freddy

since Buster Keaton or Chaplin. Martin can get a laugh simply by walking
inside a room. The Freddy invests less than retire in shape, and takes it
on top of his disguise as Ruprecht, using your whole body as a vehicle

As the seemingly hapless Janet, Headly do a good job, but it is a role
who may have been more conducive to the likes of Melanie Griffith, or even
Diane Keaton, either of whom had been given a decidedly different spin
.
The supporting cast includes Barbara Harris (Fanny), Ian McDiarmid
(Arthur)
and Dana Ivey (Mrs. Reed). Funny and thoroughly entertaining, `Dirty Rotten
scoundrels', with their contrasting styles and comic
polished presentation,
is a minor classic in its own right. A winner of the Land of Oz, where
Caine and Martin are the reigning Royalty, this is a comedy that
definitely continue to withstand the test of time. 8 / 10.
You never get tired of seeing this film fun. Michael Caine and Steve Martin are good
together as the contras trying to compete with each other. Glenne Headly plays
women competing for a challenge. He wondered who is flying in the
end. I watch this movie a dozen times on television, but it is fresh and
fun to see her again.
