Richard Curtis films have sometimes been criticized for giving too
friendly, conservative view of British society. "Four Weddings and a Funeral
" seems to take place in an England of eternal summer, a land
which consists almost entirely of green and pleasant landscape and
most exclusive districts of London and that is
populated exclusively by members of the upper and upper middle class. The script makes
cross the border in the same ideal of Scotland mists, and tartans
Highland flings, but even these scenes were actually shot in Surrey. This criticism
contains an element of truth, but is largely irrelevant
when it comes to evaluating the merits of the film, since
ignores the fact that most romantic comedies (in other media communication and in the cinema
) are against a set of relatively narrow
fund in terms of social class, which often allows the writer to satirise the ways that
class. Jane Austin, for example, the most successful writer of romantic comedy
in nineteenth-century England, a whole all the works between the landed aristocracy
rich or prosperous bourgeoisie of the day.

Most of the action of the film takes place either at or immediately before or after
, one of the four religious services mentioned in
title. The main character, Charles, is a well-to-do couple, probably
educated in public schools, and clearly a member of the professional classes
, even though they never really find out what is their job.
The film begins with a wedding in which Carlos is the best man for Angus,
one of his old friends, and in which Carrie meets an attractive young woman
americas. The film traces the ups and downs of the relationship of Charles and Carrie
, through two more marriages (the second of which was
Carrie's own, after she and Carlos have been split),'s funeral
Gareth, another friend of Charles who suffers a heart attack while
Carrie dancing at the wedding, and a final ceremony of marriage.

Hugh Grant, Charles, gives a very good performance. Grant
has a relatively narrow range as an actor, but he is capable of
some excellent work within that range. There are some subtle differences
between Charles and William, the character Grant played in "Notting Hill
", another romantic comedy written by Curtis. William is a shy young man who uses
irony, self-deprecating humor as a way of disguising its
timidity and lack of confidence in themselves. He is very in love with Anna,
that heroin of the film, but is afraid to declare his love because he
can not believe that a beautiful and successful movie star would take any interest in
owner a small library. Charles, on the other hand, is less shy
that William and enjoys more success with women. His humor is
also ironic, but for a different reason. The afraid of their emotions
and commitment and uses irony as a means of distancing himself
life and to avoid having to commit.

The film can be seen as the story of Charles in his trip to
emotional maturity. He has had a short number of cases, all of whom have
petered out precisely because he is afraid of their emotions. His relationship with Carrie
initially going the same way and she marries a
richer and more men. The change in the character of Charles is partly
the fact that he sees his world carefree bachelor
disappearing as most of his friends marry, but the case seems to have the greatest effect on
It is the funeral of Gareth, where praise is moving
read by Matthew, Gareth gay couples, touchingly played by John Hannah
. Charles is aware of the strength of love and Gareth
Matthew shared by others and comes to appreciate that such
relationship is something to be valued.

Grant is right to make a sympathetic figure Charles, despite its many flaws have
outside its ironic distancing himself
the world. He is clumsy, prone to accidents (manages to lose
ring at the wedding of Angus), much given to profane language and can be terribly
tactless, especially on his former girlfriends. The
another main character, Carrie, can perhaps be seen as a woman Charles,
someone who is on the same trip him, but he has traveled
a bit further. (It is significant that his name is an abbreviation for
Caroline, the female equivalent of the name Charles). She freely admits
have had more than thirty previous lovers, but she is the first
want to wear the emotional commitment to their relationship. Am I
by the way, the only one who liked to Andie MacDowell
performance? -- That has come to a lot of criticism, from my point of view
undeserved, in this board.

The film is, however, rather than simply a study of the relationship-
is also great fun with some wonderful lines. Hugh Grant can be very funny,
and there was a great cameo by Rowan Atkinson as a bumbling, nervous
trainee priest who keeps fluffing his lines during one of the weddings.
( "Awful devoted wife", or "Holy Goat" for "Holy Spirit"). I also liked
David Bower as Charles de deaf brother David, the late Charlotte Coleman
insolent as her younger sister Scarlett and Anna Chancellor as his ex-girlfriend Henrietta
(also known as Duckface), whose shameful The emotional incontinence
perhaps explains why Charles is so willing to
distance themselves from their feelings. I was less impressed by Simon Callow as Gareth
, strong, outgoing and warm too (as most
Callow plays characters).

In short, this was a very good movie indeed proof that the British cinema
can produce romantic comedies as good as Hollywood at its best.

The personal effects of want, need, love and desire in the friendships of a
eclectic circle of persons under review with a little humor to
witty, clever and oh-so-British comedy of love,
romance and find that special someone, `Four Weddings and a Funeral ', directed by Mike Newell.
Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell head a delicious whole
delivered in this story of a group of long time friends, all unmarried, to see and participate more
a period of months, one by one, including that step by
end to the altar. Of these, Charles (Grant) seems the most likely - and at the same time
less likely - to be next. Young, handsome and charismatic,
Charles has no problem developing a relationship (which has had a number in
fact, as we learn in a hilarious scene in particular), but sustain a
is apparently beyond his grasp. Until, at the wedding of one of his friends, Carrie meets
(MacDowell), an American, and she quickly loves.
This is not the end of the story, however, by Charles, Carrie and the public,
is only - as they say - the beginning.

September in contemporary England, one aspect of this movie that makes
for that participation is the correction that humor is presented.
Refreshing and subtle, there are more than Noel Coward, Tom Green and Rob Schneider
to it, a question of manners, customs and insinuations to take precedence
most serious-in his face, blows schlock humor. And while Grant and
MacDowell are at the forefront of the piece, Newell does an excellent job of
development of all characters, for example, providing sufficient detail to each individual to
give the film some depth and dimension, without having to actually go
too deep. He never lets you forget that first and foremost,
this is a comedy. There is an idea, but this is not a
in-depth commentary on human nature, although there are some nuances and shades
implications in that direction (Charles is always late to weddings, for example
, perhaps an unconscious denial of the impending nuptials?). Majority
importantly, the characterizations are rich, and the story is involving and
presented with a flow that allows it to be effortlessly swept
with it.

Some players make a career out of playing a variation of the same
character in the movie after movie, fighting for the final image. W.C.
Fields played the hen-Peck husband in a series of films, finally
refinement of that character in the person of Harold Bissonette in
"It is a gift '. To Hugh Grant, is outgoing, a little self-conscious
and stammering, eyelid flutter charming, which makes a change in
films like "Sense and Sensitivity ',` The English Who climbed a hill, fell
But a mountain, 'Notting Hill' and `Mickey Blue Eyes'. But Charles is
its final image of that character, the one in which
achieves balance and honesty that makes the character so credible.
This is a good bit of work of Grant, and certainly one of his most memorable performances
.

Andie MacDowell, meanwhile, offers a more composed performance as Carrie,
tranquillity of americas reserved with a bluntness that captive Charles.
MacDowell brings a sense of stillness to the role
sensuously seductive, which lends credibility to Charles' with his enthusiasm. It is a role for which
MacDowell is perfectly suited because it allows you to play
effectively to their natural behaviour, calm and exquisite beauty and femininity
.

In a party that has to be an actor's dream, Simon Callow is absolutely
exuberant as Gareth, one of the accessories of Charles' circle of friends.
Something more than an effervescent character, Gareth is something of
conscience of the film, laughing away, which was naked and every claim
or as a hypocrisy of today flesh and blood Spirit of Christmas Present.
It is a character who gives the necessary balance and perspective to the film, and
is wonderfully played by Callow.

also become particularly noticeable in the proceedings are John Hannah as
Matthew, Kristin Scott Thomas, who is quite attractive as Fiona, James Fleet
as Tom, a character reminiscent of its very Hugo in the television series "The Vicar of Dibley
" (and very effective here), Charlotte Coleman, in the memorable role of Scarlett
, and Rowan Atkinson as the hapless father
Gerald.

Rounding out the supporting cast are David Bower (David), Timothy Walker
(Angus), Sara Crowe (Laura), Anna Chancellor (Henrietta), Simon Kunz (John),
David Haig (Bernard), Sophie Thompson (Lydia Jane) and Corin Redgrave
(Hamish). There are enough twists and turns along the way to avoid this movie
unpredictable, including a scene near the end that at first seems so
means of spirit that can make you biting his fist and shouting, `Oh , No! "
But do not worry, Newell provides a snapshot resolution
in line with the rest of the film, and not only works but it gives you a good laugh to boot.
Entertaining, pleasant and fun, "Four Weddings and a Funeral" makes it a
satisfactory feeling good cinematic experience that only seems so wonderfully civilized
amidst the seemingly endless rancor largest in the world today.
This is known as the magic of cinema. I type this 9 / 10.
