Fargo is based on true events that occurred in Minnesota in 1987 with the names changed to protect the victims. Jerry works in his father-in-law's car dealership and has gotten himself in financial problems. He tries various schemes to come up with money needed for a reason that is never really explained. It has to be assumed that his huge embezzlement of money from the dealership is about to be discovered by father-in-law. When all else falls through, plans he set in motion earlier for two men to kidnap his wife for ransom to be paid by her wealthy father (who doesn't seem to have the time of day for son-in-law). From the moment of the kidnapping, things go wrong and what was supposed to be a non-violent affair turns bloody with more blood added by the minute. Jerry is upset at the blood shed, which turns loose a pregnant sheriff from MN who is tenacious in attempting to solve the three murders in her jurisdiction.

I always thought Shakesperean Fargo would make a great play, you could alter
modern elements and still have created a buzz
400 years ago in suburban England. In fact, the plot is similar to that of Hamlet, in
that they both have characters that root that create plans that Zany
end up spinning wildly out of control in the bloodshed. Many people seem to like
Fargo qualities for his humor, his characterization of the Minnesota
culture and Frances McDormand-not me. I love Fargo
for his brilliant writing, his tragic musical score, its tragic plot,
William H Macy, Harve Presnell and Steve Buscemi, their ignorance of political correctness
(how many movies you can remember when
only two minority characters are both revealed that creeps). I wish to inform
attention to one reason why overlooked the film works so well - so well that
music fits the visuals in this film. Each murder scene is scored
superbly, and other audio tracks really add to the effect (eg
notice how when the police officer Carl Showalter question "What is this?" In reference
to the hostages, a disturbing sound of guitar is immediately
which has played an instant psychological effect on how you interpret the scene
). I've seen this movie more, well, a disgrace
number of times and have pledged their script, from start to finish
, from memory. Fargo is the latest film by the Coen Brothers, a brilliant
tragedy, and restores my faith in places like Roger Ebert
this film as in its fourth favorite movie of 90 years.
With all movies are these days it's good to see a film like fun, wicked
, dramatic, and completely insane as "Fargo". It is one of those films
you just have to see. William H. Macy gives an Oscar-nominated performance
as a car salesman who hires two thugs (one of a
know-it-all-know-nothing and the other a psychopath insane) to kidnap his wife
so that it can maintain half of its rescue of either parent.
do not need to say nothing goes well and Brainerd sheriff Frances McDormand (
in an Oscar-winning role) comes to save the day. I will not give anything away
because the material is too good to tell those who have not seen this
inventive film. "Fargo" was classified in the 100 Greatest Films list
in 1996 and is well deserved. In this era of the number of films that this movie was a refreshing
flashback to risk-taking style that has made the
1970
a great decade for movies. 5 of 5 stars.
