But the case of Leonard Vole, a charmer accused of murdering a rich middle-aged widow, proves irresistible — particlularly when Sir Wilfrid meets the accused's wife, the remarkable Christine Vole. Christine will appear as a witness: not the defense, but for the prosecution.

To see "prosecution witness" for the first time in 2008 is a
put a ceiling surprise. Nobody could do it better than Billy Wilder
did in 1957. A man accused of murder, Tyrone Power, the weakest link in this chain
terrible. Sir Wilfred is called upon to defend him, is played by the extraordinary
Charles Laughton, but only outside the hospital -

charming and personable enough but will not risk their lives to save her until
Marlene Dietrich makes its entrance - and what an entrance! How wonderful that
what amounts to a little Agatha Christie usual fare becomes such
entertaining and sometimes right down riveting piece of film-making.
