The crew of the Serenity is getting desperate. They have lain lower and lower to protect their doctor, Simon Tam (Sean Maher), and his telepathic traumatized little sister, River (Summer Glau), from the alliance, whom he rescued her from a year earlier. This has made getting jobs harder and now they are desperate. When they take River on a robbery during which Reavers (humans who have gone crazy and turned into cannibals) attack, Simon decides that its time to leave the crew of the Serenity for his and River's safety. She then mutters "Miranda" and goes berserk and nearly shoots Capt. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), until her brother says the safety word to put her to sleep. Reynolds decides to take them back on board for safety, only now an alliance operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is on their tracks and making Reynolds determined to find out what "Miranda" is and what the Alliance is hiding.

I am a fan of the original series Firefly, and had high hopes for
Serenity based on examinations. Unfortunately, it is not nearly as good as I expected
.
What rubbed me the wrong way? * Waaaaay too much emphasis on combat,
starting with the opening scene. The fun of Firefly was always in the
firmness and determination of Mal and his crew in the face of a hostile universe
. The film that spirit reduced to a series of action films
cliches - the worst of which is the revelation that
River is not only a troubled psychic, but it is also Jr. Kickboxing Champion of
Galaxy. At the moment the "climate" around the battles rolled, I was completely bored with
fighting. River unaided culling
a horde of Reavers was just nonsense. Mal against
murderer was slightly better, but still cliches and unbelievable.
* The actions were too hyped-up and extreme. I understand that the
characters have to be punched up a bit to make the leap from television to a
movie, but it was too far. Mal threatening to kill its crew if
not help you travel through territory Reaver? Rio launching
his brother in the throat because she thought it could "turn off"?
please. Wash and death was just ridiculous (and unnecessary). Even
special effects were exaggerated - that would have been better
only half the burning FX budget for this movie in a big bonfire.
* Plot holes galore. It is easy to overlook holes in the plot
if a movie is good enough, but in this case the holes threatened to unravel the whole ball of yarn
. The Alliance knows that evil is seeking refuge with the book
or other safe refuge, so wipe them all ...
but not stick around to greet Serenity, when it comes! How stupid is that? No, really
. The Reavers we all live in a small clump of vessels in the heart of
nowhere, but can not divert Mal Serenity a few kilometres around them in
To get from point A to point B? Space is a great place, people, but manufacturers
for this movie do not want you to think of it.
* Half of the plot elements that were not filled with holes are only
incomprehensible. Can anyone tell me what exactly killed Wash?
Seems to be the remains of a ship Reaver, but there is no way of knowing. Or is
Alliance is a boat? I had trouble caring. When Mal brings the entire fleet
Reaver to Mr Universe on the planet, that is doing it on purpose? He
to wait to find the Alliance awaiting him? The answer to that key questions
seems both yes and no. Much of the film was such
frantic hurry to move that could not be bothered to fazer sense.
* simplistic. After the failure of Firefly, the film is obviously
dumb-down for mass consumption. The revelations about the river,
Reavers, Miranda, etc. were disappointingly simple. The
interesting relationship between Kaylee and Dr.
was reduced to a series of sex jokes. The only character who remained strong through the whole film is
Jayne (as it still works well in a clear
shoot-em-up like this). The accumulation of the secrets of "Miranda"
accompanied by lameness only by the easy disclosure of secret in the same
about 15 minutes later.
I wanted to like this film, but I walked out feeling that I had
saw something that was part of 1 Firefly mixed with at least 2 parts
conventional Hollywood movie.
*** *** NO spoilers I have seen the film hidden in a preview in Houston, TX in
6/23/05. I was happy to be doing more of these characters and
this configuration.
Visually, is impressive. The additional budget for effects was well spent.
characters and their relationships were recognizable, but had not been
changes in the fair. I think this was necessary in
cinema, and part of an evolution of the television show to the big screen (
the film takes place 6 months after the last episode, "objects in space") .
Things have changed.
There is a greater action and violence at this level (duh, is a film,
not on TV), and we have some major revelations about the world (which some who
saw him with me and do not like). There are some major events affecting
characters, and I was not totally satisfied with them
- Shock is the word. But this is Joss the world, and his characters,
and he tells stories that means. Failure to receive
linked to hurt our feelings, he just says things as they are. I think he did say
that this was the hardest thing that had to write.
At least one person in our selection was a "Firefly virgin," and he said he liked
. I hope that people who have no exposure to the fair
will be able to see this and enjoy it. Our big damn heroes come across
well, and I hope that this is going to get some deserved exposure. This is a non-
has banned big-time action / adventure sci-fi story,
bold and raw, and in a world unlike what portrayed in SF before (well, to

get to see the aftermath.
