Upon seeing this film on DVD again - more than 30 years after the first time I saw him
- I am struck by two things. First, it argues well for a film so
smells of a certain time (the 1960's, of course, not the 1890s). Secondly, if the filmmakers
every intention in this way or not is really very good
film about a topic not addressed often Westerns:
arrested adolescence.

Kid''es about two guys who, physically, are pushing 40, but whose mental age
is stuck somewhere around 16. They can be charming, but
his entire life revolve around his narcissistic PAL-ship. For them, being outlaws

impulses that have not won, but merely hanging around with each other
. His talk to each other is mainly ritualized brittle and coincidences
stock jokes, mixed with Butch's chimeras. They can not talk about anything
serious, even at the end, when it must realize - at some level - that
that is about to die. Screenwriter William Goldman emphasizes the strangely
Callow, adolescent tone of their relationship they have repeatedly
express surprise when stumble over some bit of biography - his real
names, or the fact Sundance is that New Jersey - that you think
real friends who have experienced decades ago.
The film of the whole question is that Butch and Sundance can not develop any kind of dramatic arc
. Severely to new times demand that change with the times or
die - and who can not change and ultimately choose, by default, to die. They

not care about much outside of themselves and Etta.
This is why it ends the film - that famous freeze frame - is so perfect.
Butch and Sundance are safe and, in its niche in history. They
not have to worry about the changing times or incomprehensible outside world
it any longer. They have gained with the passage of time and change - the only way
nobody can ever.
