(biography, drama, music)
Six incarnations of Bob Dylan: an actor, a folk singer, an electrified troubadour, Rimbaud, Billy the Kid, and Woody Guthrie. Put Dylan's music behind their adventures, soliloquies, interviews, marriage, and infidelity. Recreate 1960s documentaries in black and white. Put each at a crossroads, the artist becoming someone else. Jack, the son of Ramblin' Jack Elliott, finds Jesus; handsome Robbie falls in love then abandons Claire. Woody, a lad escaped from foster care, hobos the U.S. singing; Billy awakes in a valley threatened by a six-lane highway; Rimbaud talks. Jude, booed at Newport when he goes electric, fences with reporters, pundits, and fans. He won't be classified.

Haynes' Bob Dylan biopic adventurers, which uses six actors
of both sexes and of various races ranging in ages from 11 to 50, is both exhausting and
fun to watch. It is also difficult to describe. But let's start with the six
and the characters or aspects that portray. Arthur
(Ben Whishaw) is the Dylan that embodies Rimbaud and serves as a kind
narrator of whom see smoking ironic and give answers to some kind of inquisition
sporadically throughout the film. Woody (the wonderful
young Marcus Carl Franklin, an amazing singer and actor) is a precocious
-hopper rail with a guitar (labeled as the real Woody's,
This machine Mater fascists) and tall tales starting with his claim that he is
Woody Guthrie. Woody's show scenes
rescued by a black family and a white family and musical performances black country.
represents the first shape-shifting Dylan in search of an identity
and say a bunch of lies along the way.
Jack (Christian Bale) is that Dylan became a hit in Greenwich Village and went
in the south and sang "The Ballad of Hattie Carroll" and other texts
, Folk songs, "High-profile" political "Dylan
led a movement and became famous with his brilliant early LP's.
But Jack does not want to be typecast and "betrayed" his public worship
and her lover and folksinging champion Alice (Julianne Moore), Joan Baez
in stand-seen later in "interviews." ; Jack disappears and his place is taken by Robbie
(Heath Ledger), a young actor in New York that
becomes famous for starring in a film that 1965 represents the late Jack.
Robbie meets Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) in a village and cafeteria
falls in love, and a turbulent ten years of marriage continues, the liquidation
painfully during the Vietnam War's end .
If Jack represents the cast of takeoff early in style and Robbie represents
Dylan family life, Jude (Cate Blanchett) Dylan is the artist,
essentially as we have seen in mid to late sixties, when he toured England
(a particular event chronic two-Leacock
Pennebaker documentary) and touched his audience, some of whose members felt betrayed
and shouted " Judas! "When he went from solo guitar and harmonica
more staff rock songs with strong accompaniment. Jude's
segments are partly drawn from Pennebaker, but largely consist of
magnificent black and white scenes and deliberately "churlishly" (Haynes'
word) imitative of Fellini 8 ½.
Jude's new style is admired by Allen Ginsberg (David Cross) and
meters groupie Coco Rivington (Michelle Williams) and becomes
internationally renowned. But he remains misunderstood by the protest music
old guard and journalists as the British
conventional TV host Jones (Bruce Greenwood)-that 's incorporated into a music video for
Highway 61 Revisited "Ballad of a Thin Man": ". .
. something is happening here / And you do not know what it is, do you, Mister Jones
. ". .
Jude Arthur and articulate the first Dylan's defiant, ironic posture
to the public, but Jude has spent touring and nihilism
leads him to an existential crisis.
is symbolically reborn in Pastor John (Christian Bale again), that
moved to Stockton after twenty years and become a born-again preacher, singing their own
gospel songs. Lastly, the latest version of Dylan appears
Billy (Richard Gere), a full withdrawal from the world-up threats to destroy their city
Riddle cause him to enter public life again. This
sequence evokes a sixty historic western in which Pat Garrett
(Bruce Greenwood) is a character.
This is only the barest outline of two three-hour film, in which various
"Dylan's" weave in and out. Perhaps the reason that Woody
found footage of Billy's delicious and colorful but wearying
has to do with the latter coming two hours later. However, Gere and his
Dylan sequences evoke less well and are puzzling to interpret.
Blanchett in contrast are, of course, the more conventional
simple. She is the only one that successfully mimics the
physical appearance and voice artist (less
Whishaw does a better job with the voice). But Blanchett is intentionally inferior imitation
(the biopic and conventionality of films like Ray
avoided) for Jude to be played by a woman-who was scheduled for
Haynes in the script even before he chose his actor. The method
Haynes has chosen avoids cliché. This remains a biopic, but
is a sophisticated and fractured portrait
is well justified by the nature of their subject. Dylan has always been a way to change;
some of its permutations were left out, as the period of the Jewish orthodox and
jdl supporter. But it is wise to see the Dylan
man, the husband, the artist, are politicians, and religious
as being completely independent entities, not simply because biopic sequence
can dramatize the complexity of this artist and such
protein existence. Haynes' film makes you reflect on one's own biography, as well as shaping
imaginative aspects of Bob Dylan not
nonfiction account can actually provide. Perhaps
is daringly experimental methodology, which led
Dylan himself, through his eldest son Jesse, the granting of both Haynes
music rights and the rights biographical. Haynes has opted for a multifaceted
and original way to use the songs in Dylan. Only Franklin
indeed them with his own voice. Otherwise, the banda sonora
mixes original recordings with Dylan covers, with new ones
people as widely as various shelters Richter, Iggy Pop, John Doe and
Sonic Youth, and another type of music, including appropriate for 8 ½ - Esquire
sequences, Nino Rota. There is a voice-over narration from Kris Kristofferson
. Haynes worked on the screenplay for years, then collaborated with
Oren Moverman.
Not to mainstream audiences or prime Oscar bait, but a challenge,
fun to watch.
shown in the press projections of the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center
2007. Haynes was present a strong following Q & A with J. Hoberman
the Village Voice, which revealed that the director is a
articulate and intelligent man and knows his Dylan.
Take all the music, everything you've heard, read, seen in
documentary on Bob and throwing them into a blender and pull them
and what you get is "I'm not there" and is a tasty concoction
a film that comes like a dream of everything that is known publicly
on his life. Maybe even himself dreaming of Bob
the course of his life. The more we know about what is out there on Bob
more you will be able to make connections with the scenes of this beautiful
mounting on the poet, singer, musician and genius of the past 60
years or more. This is a great movie about a very complicated
artist could never be placed as a representation of any person or ideology
although it seems to imply that many people. I suppose that Dylan was
always be the great enigma and this film only serves to perpetuate,
which is part of what makes it so successful, but as we all know
no success like failure and failure to success not at all.
