I watched this movie after much of the controversy about it at Cannes
had happened. The buzz in the U.S. press was that the movie is slanted
Lars Von Trier and reflects the ignorance of American society. Such
are specious arguments in his face - there are examples of large
literature and film, where the creator never set foot in
establishment, as any reader knows Shakespeare. Therefore, discounting the
self-appointed guardians of americas, what is exactly about this movie,
what are the merits of the film and why evoke such strong feelings of his audience
, Especially americas? What Von Trier has done is
have several icons americas: the gangster, the small town, women
anguish, the ideal of the common person, the local sage and wise elderly gentleman doctor
, And has become its head
time to create a play about human motivation, greed and corruption of
influence of power. The people of Dogville is simple on the surface
and decent people. Grace and the arrival of his helplessness is the catalyst that
, step by step, tempts people of Dogville to inflict his
greater and more humiliation to feed their desires
now without limits. Therefore, it is their complete humiliation that
twist at the end the viewer leaves very little sympathy for the plight of Dogville's citizens
. It is a powerful message and the judgement of the characters
is one that takes no prisoners. What's more than a couple of examples of this behavior
in contemporary American society (and that of americas
past) and facing these issues directly is the reason for the controversy surrounding
she and - in addition to the brilliant performance, especially
by Ms. Kidman and Paul Bettany - what makes it great art.
Von Trier has made a film that is the quintessence of americas
proletarian artistic tradition and its place in 1930
United States is part of the film's genius. He is not an American and that this movie
did not originate in Hollywood should give us all pause.
There is a scene in which Grace is facing the people of Dogville, with a critique
his misbehavior. His answer is well
deny the truth of what he said or blaming herself Grace tempting for them. This
film, without being preachy or dogmatic, attempts to provide its own
criticism and received the same reaction that the film
protagonist. I do not be surprised if it was Von Trier
original intention. Dogville is a disturbing and powerful film.
I find it very amusing that so many Americans were outraged that
Lars von Trier had the audacity to criticize his country without having visited
. After all, we do all the time, right?
Millions of us are quite content to sit on our couches and criticize China, North Korea,
Zimbabwe, Israel and many other countries without having visited
its shores. And we are perfectly justified to do so. So why should
Von Trier was vilified for criticizing americas
a few thousand miles away? Well, of course, I do not think it should. The
is perfectly entitled to his opinion, and those who weep and moan are symptomatic of the americas
biggest problem - his inability to take criticism without
get their pants in a twist. Undoubtedly, every great country must prosper
to criticism. We need to help grow and develop. But instead of americas
seem to resemble a child sometimes, spouting phrases like useless,
"America: love it or leave it" or "You're either with us or against
Us. " It is therefore a film like Dogville, which refuses to Revel
hole in the American Dream, is of vital importance, and is a film that
should be embraced, not rejected.

But anyway, what the critics seem to overlook is the fact that
Dogville could be a small town anywhere. It may be the first
part in an American trilogy, but the small town with its values
prejudice and hypocrisy are universal. Everyone can relate ...

The film begins and ends with a God's eye view of the proceedings and
is not hard to imagine that Von Trier is looking down on
characters, judging them. In fact, as he himself said Tom, everything is a
game, a test, and Von Trier is the one who pulls the strings.

The game begins when Grace comes into the city. The townsfolk are scared
, but Tom thinks it's a gift. He wants to see if
Dogville has a problem with your acceptance. Well, at first,
citizens are understandably cautious, but are ultimately placated when Grace
proves that she can help them out. And to top it develops
a good relationship with the city and its citizens. But even in
from the relationship is far from being equal. She may like the whole world,
but she needs a slave. However, the townsfolk as their best as this, when she is happy
subordinate.

As the film progresses, the city is more proof. The police post
wanted posters and accuse Grace of crimes that she could not have committed
(as in the city at the time). But instead this
with what everyone around her cause, the town gets cold feet. This
wants to help, but only insofar as it does not put at risk.
hence, doubly determined to enslave Grace
to make themselves feel better. It is an extraordinary movement, but is anything but distant
. People are brave, but people have the habit of worrying
showing that they are thorns.

And seeing as Grace affects the status quo, the townsfolk decide
take their frustrations out on it. Men violation of their physical and
rape of his wife psychologically. In fact, most disturbing scene is not
one of the many scenes of rape - despite Chuck violation of the scene makes
demonstrate the brilliance of all, what it will show the world < br> about their daily activities and turn a blind eye to what is happening
- is the place of women abuse Grace and the destruction of their
figurines. It is more than just a physical violation. This is a violation
everything. Their dreams were broken just before their eyes.

But why the people of Dogville react in this manner? Certainly, his behavior
is an exaggeration. Well, and it is not. Of course,
movie paints a bleak portrait of human nature that you might not find
in your street, but I think the film shows that we all have
darkness present in us. Just the right conditions and
right buttons to be pushed for that may arise. In the case of Dogville,
be seen for many reasons, but I think the main reason is because
Grace shows all what they are. Before his arrival everyone is
happily trapped in a quagmire, but once she arrives everything changes.
The whole world is facing its mediocrity and the whole world the lies are exposed
. In a scene McKay, having finally admitted his
blindness, in fact, thanks to Grace "shows us that you are", but during his time in Dogville
also forces bill to realize their stupidity (
sheets game for him), Liz its unattractiveness (for the capture of Tom's
eye), Ben his loneliness (by introducing him), Chuck and Vera
unhappy marriage (for the capture of Chuck's eye) and Tom cowardice
(through its refusal to kiss her, though she admits her love for him
). Needless to say, not everyone likes the exposure.
It is difficult to deal with you when you do not like what you see. And, therefore, the
person you are going to punish is the one that has made him see his reflection

The end is certainly bleak, but I think it compels us to take
a hard look at ourselves. How often have we taken advantage of other people
when I should have helped? How often have been our selfish intentions? And the grace
final actions suggest one thing for me: if someone
as treating an animal, you should not be surprised when they treat you like a
too.
