Since the hit-and-run murder of his wife five years ago, Rennie Cray has crisscrossed America in his souped-up, stripped-down '68 Plymouth Barracuda, pursuing her killer. Through a series of mechanical innovations, Fargo has turned his rampaging '72 Cadillac Eldorado into a monstrous extension of his own twisted body and mind. "Highwayman" marks the return of director Robert Harmon and composer Mark Isham for
subgenus of road horror film that they all but established in 1986
the historical horror film, "The Hitcher" . Whereas the film
coasted to the ambiguity of Eric Red's script and the minimalist
strange chemistry between a psychopath (Rutger Hauer) and his victim
(C. Thomas Howell), "Highwayman" is much "cleaner" version of the film that
- clean in terms of cinematography, violence and generally
appearance. It's a very brilliant production with choreography well
action and razor-sharp editing that puts you in the midst of chaos and
not only assaulting their senses. Jim Caviezel jaded
distills the victim's right notes obsession and exhaustion, and Rhona Mitra
pseudo-Sandra Bullock is a breakthrough because it unites hunting
Fargo (Colm Feore, looking as a refugee from
David Cronenberg's "Crash"), a murderer who uses his soup-up 1972 El Dorado as a weapon.
As he did in "The Hitcher," Harmon Believes
skill in photography, editing, and the decision to keep off-camera villain Fargo
for the first hour, thus upping the suspense considerably.
Isham's musical score and sets a good mood is as effective as his previous work
. Where "Highwayman" comes up short is in its
simple, bare-bones story (something padding of the addition
Frankie Faison traffic investigator); clocking in at a miserable 81
minutes (including credits end), one gets the impression that
the characters could have developed more and more action sequences
could have been infused in the film. In its current state, "Highwayman" is in
too quickly, but remains a diverting, refined thriller
all the same.
If you are familiar with "The Hitcher" with Rutger Hauer, and liked
, you might like this. The main difference in the two films is that
here, the murderer never leaves his car. It is not as intense or
well done as the first, but Highwayman is sufficiently decent for a look.
It is very short so it will not be wasted all day,
anyway.
The story in a nutshell: a serial murderer run by a young woman in his car
at random and was not caught for years until Jim Caviezel, whose wife was also a victim
the murderer, figures out is the same guy,
and tracks him during a confrontation of their own.
The film begins well and is very intense, but loses momentum in the second half
. Boredom is not the problem, is the credibility of the
history. Too many holes in the plot and becomes nothing
credible. Not surprisingly, this movie never received much publicity:
too has a "B" feel to it, despite the presence of Caviezel.
however, is entertaining and runtime real history is
barely 76 minutes, so if you're looking for an hour and a quarter of
escapism, this is the answer.
