A bunch of fictional characters (Mina Harker, Captain Nemo, Allan Quatermain
, the invisible man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer
) are called together in 1899 to fight a crazy that threatens to take
the world.
The plot is silly and full of large holes (Mina Harker was not a vampire; Tom Sawyer
working for the U.S. government? Mr Hyde looks like a cousin
the Hulk; Dorian Gray is an immortal?), but the film itself looks great,
are a lot of incredible special effects (and, surprisingly, some bad)
and moves so quickly that you really do not have time to stop and think about it
. Just ignore logic, plot and characterizations, lean back and let
the film that swept over. There is a fight scene or action each
5 or 10 minutes - you will not be bored.
All acting is quite good - Connery is excellent (as always)
Quatermain and Peta Wilson makes a very sexy vampire. The only bad acting
surprisingly comes from two good players - Stuart Townsend is very boring as
Dorian Grey and Shane West is way out of his league as Tom Sawyer. The
scenes between him and Connery are almost embarrassing to see - is Connery
acting rings around them.
So - is a good movie? No, but it is a pleasant. Only
not sit and think - during or after the movie! Good:
for a hot summer afternoon.
I've been reading the comments in a page a little bemused fashion. This
seems to be divided between those who dislike the film because it is not enough
the original graphic novel and people who do not like it because
who has never heard of half the characters that are members of the
League. The latter seems to me a nonsense unutterably
reason for rejection of a film. Does Nobody reads the classics? Nobody said
Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jules Verne, HG Wells,
or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? I find it hard to believe. Regarding the former
- is not enough, as the graphic novel, in other words - how in the
omprobar a screenwriter can accommodate the dark and twisted visions of Alan Moore
over a period of two hours Hollywood movie, anyway?
I do not think you can compare anything written by Alan Moore to the
ending on the screen is apparently "based on the graphic novel."
(The same applies to hell, which is another most people bread and
one that I think is sufficiently appreciated, although the style is
impressive. You do not even want to think of reaction that will occur
Once the guards leave!)
What seems to have been missed by most people is that this movie is
on style as opposed to the bottom . It is based on a graphic novel. That is
an elegant way of saying that is based on a comic book. At that level, the film succeeds admirably
. The characters are archetypes of their literary ancestors
. It is not supposed to, strictly speaking, human. Of course
the plot is grandiose, unworkable, and over the top. Hello? Are not most
comic books like that? Good heavens, this is not the most STAR
war?
I do not pretend that this is a masterpiece. Making the assertion that
is fun to see if one approaches with a willing suspension of disbelief.
For a couple of bucks shelled out in the DVD rental shop, takes one to one
different world for nearly two hours. At that level, it's worth a rental.
It is also worth a rental, once one looks at the film, listen to the commentary
of various actors and to realize how well these
called "unknowns" make a variety accents that are not even close to their own. Plus
golf anecdotes are fun. (And I do not even like golf
.)
This is not Casablanca. Nor is the Titanic, so eternally grateful
the gods. (Now, there was an overhyped piece of garbage that purported to be inaccurate
history, but I parentheses.) But it's kind of fun, anyway, as long as
not be taken too seriously.
