(comedy)
Alex Rose (Stiller) and Nancy Kendricks (Barrymore) are a young, professional, New York couple in search of their dream home. When they finally find the perfect Brooklyn brownstone they are giddy with anticipation. The duplex is a dream come true, complete with multiple fireplaces, except for one thing: Mrs. Connelly (Eileen Essel), the cranky old lady who lives on the rent-controlled top floor. Assuming she is elderly and ill, they take the apartment but their hopes are quickly dashed when they realize that Mrs. Connelly is an energetic senior who enjoys watching her television at top volume day in and day out and rehearsing in a brass band. A writer, Alex is attempting to finish his novel against a looming deadline. However, each day as he begins to write, he is interrupted by Mrs. Connelly's numerous demands and requests and what begins as a nuisance quickly escalates into an all-out war. When Nancy loses her job and the pair are trapped at home together with Mrs. Connelly, their rage turns to homicidal fantasy as they plot ways to get rid of their no-good neighbour...

Danny DeVito
rating:5.60
That something else, but Danny DeVito could take a sweet little old woman and seriously fun
make a sweet little old hell movie that reminded me very much of
Home Alone? Hmmm? Drew Barrymore, sweeter than ever, is
sugar and spices and ready for some down to earth with murder, while the very demented
Ben Stiller, like the twisted offspring of Chevy Chase and Jerry Seinfeld ,
Slam dunks himself, not far from his own disappearance. Hey, people, Duplex
is a seriously funny and entertaining piece of madness from one of my favorites
people insane, Danny DeVito. If you must have 'cinema' to be satisfied or
you do not have space in his heart for silliness, then you may want to skip this
. Otherwise, the drop in DVD and buckle up. Duplex
is ready to take off.
It is always nice to find a simple, enjoyable comedy amid the horde of
incorporate moneymakers released each year. Not that I have a distaste for
epics or more domestically produced films, but after watching movies overwhelming,
it's always fun to see a simple a little later. And if that's what you're looking
- a simple, sweet comedy - then "Duplex"
certainly fits the bill. Almost
.
It is not bad but not exactly sweet. Its premise sounds like the old
- They are two owners who are trying to kill his tenant above, which is
can not be forced to leave the apartment, due to contractual obligations. For
Alex and Nancy (Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore), this is the first
no problem at all. To buy a nice Duplex in New York and have no doubts
on loan to the floor above. Quoting the title of a film starring
DeVito (the director), "What's the worst that could happen?"
Well, a lot.
First, as always happens, everything seems nice and dandy.
They move in and buy some furniture, establish their new lives, and manage to relax a bit.
But soon the "sweet old lady" your real estate agent told them about
turns to be the spawn of Satan. She is an Irish woman who is "more or less
between ninety-five and a hundred-and-five," lives on top of itself, its television
plays very strong throughout the night, boasts
husband of his past and how a large sea fisherman was once called Alex and Alan
refuses to admit that a mistake has been made, etc., etc. She asks Alex
up every day and you extravagant has run errands for her. Alex is a struggle
writer with a deadline before his second book is due, so it tries to say
the sweet old lady who can not help out all the time. "But there's only one thing
this," he says, comes in an angelic smile in order to make
I'm sorry for her. But soon she
grounds that their owners are trying to rape and murder of her
and policemen side with women. Left with nowhere to go, Alex and Nancy
eventually succumb to their anger and decide they must put the hag
of their misery and take charge of the plant above. Their excuse is that it is a baby
on the road, and you'll need the room, but by this time we sympathize with
two of them and want to see this woman killed anyway. Trust me, after you
see this movie, he feels the same way, too.
And I guess it's part of the success of "Duplex" - like other films DeVito
, requires a plot apparently terrible (see "Throw Momma From the Train
" ;) And, for progress and development of his characters, and drawing us in
their conflicts, we refer to them. We want the hag dead,
too.
Danny DeVito's directorial debut, "Throw Momma from the train" (1987) was a simple
dark comedy that borrowed its premise Hitchcock of "Strangers in
A train. "Since then, DeVito has delivered a fair share of hits (" The War of the Roses
") and lost (" Death to Smoochy "). One thing is certain, however:
All his films have a style of humor, and the exploitation of
weakness of humanity, that separates them from the rest of
gender.
DeVito is able to make the audience relate to their characters and they have
fantasize about doing similar things. "I'm so bad," complains Barrymore
half of the film. "Well, I have my fantasies, too," she said
Stiller, who is accompanied by images of him killing the elderly above
and smiling about it. He said his ideas. She smiles. "You are wrong,
too! "
From a standpoint of text, in fact, this seems very wrong, and it seems as if
be in stone (" Natural Born Killers ") or Tarantino-written (" ;
True Romance ") movie. But when you're watching "Duplex," which comes across as an all
joke, and does not seem very cruel at all, DeVito and his ability to transform its audience in
fantasizing is slightly sick kind of genius
and if you stop thinking about it. I never kill an elderly woman, but "Duplex" is
able to make us sympathize with his characters and agree with his decision
. Now that is the sign of a good leader if you ask me
.
4 / 5 stars.
