Christian, a young wannabe Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris' now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newly-discovered electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with Satine, the club's highest paid star and the city's most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - a meeting place of high life and low, where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich mingled with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.

At the risk of sounding too grandiose, "Moulin Rouge" is the best film
I've seen all year, maybe the best I've seen in over a year. It
operÃstico in the best sense of the word, being at once massively
outlandish and deeply personal. Clearly, many people took risks in
career choice for this movie, and while "Moulin Rouge" will not be able to accumulate a huge box office
, I think this movie will become a classic along with their other two
movie "Strictly Ballroom" and "Romeo & Juliet".
In the display of "Moulin Rouge" I saw last week, at least 5 people
walked away. At the same time I have heard members of the public acoustic gasping in movies
visual and talk back to the screen. The source of these
strong reactions? Baz Luhrmann confidence in their garish film
commitment and vision of their players have in him. The cast is filled their duties with enthusiasm, even when
whole scene totters on the edge of excess - but strangely enough
, is the approach set out in "Moulin Rouge", apart from other films
these days. Whereas some of the actors sleepwalk through their roles, as
collect their paychecks, everything about "Moulin Rouge" is seriously.
This film is the fight against "Pearl Harbor" because instead of being a hodgepodge
market to test ideas, "Moulin Rouge" presents a bold vision and dares
the audience to accept or reject. For my part, accepted it with joy. A comparison
saying: Nicole Kidman and Luhrmann has Ewen MacGregor
sing the song of love film. Very bold. "Pearl Harbor" Michael Bay chose
Faith Hill. Very safe. Too safe. Can you imagine Ben Afleck bands out "
You"?
"Moulin Rouge" glitters with such bold decisions. This is a
sumptuous feast for the ears and eyes with gorgeous costumes, intricate sets (Nicole Kidman's
boudoir in a giant elephant is one example), and choreography by outlandishly
dance numbers are paraded with frenetic enthusiasm. And
music, music! As you probably know by now, Luhrmann has thrown in his
period piece, a collage of musical fragments, among many bits, "
The Sound of Music", Madonna, The Police and Elton John. In most cases, not a song performed without
intersplicing. Witness Luhrmann's daring:
the opening number included a merger of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade" with
Nirvana "smells like Teen Spirit." And here is part SPOOKY: works .
entire film plays this way, and mostly works. Majority
surpising is that "Moulin Rouge" has a solid, deeply sincere emotional core.
Although the film professes to be about love, I would add that it is also
about the loss. The Moulin Rouge is a park where adults are intended to be
children with the added spice of sensuality.
All performances are excellent, but the hidden jewel is Jim Broadbent as
Zidler. Broadbent has been doing for years majestically understated
support the work of "Brazil" to "April delighted" with "Topsy-Turvy."
"Moulin Rouge", manages to be repulsive and beloved. His spirit
version of "Like a Virgin" is classic. Too bad it is not in the
banda sonora.
expect to be overwhelmed by "Moulin Rouge" in the most unexpected ways
delicious. It makes you wonder why other films can not or dare not
to be that bold.
I have not ever felt a film by the way I do about it "Moulin Rouge".
It is not only a movie ... is a cinematic experience of tastes
I have never seen before. The story, music, acting, visual imagery
strikes emotion in me I never thought possible before a movie.
Is undoubtedly the most brilliant piece of cinematic art I've ever seen.
vertigo, maddening, beautiful, and heartbreaking! The music is
rapturous, and Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman's voice
complement the other and history perfectly. This film takes its story to a mythical level
and surrounds these two star-crossed lovers with music and images that
simply take your breath away. The story is big, huge, and opera,
as is the music. The brilliant Result skillfully weaves many modern
popular songs, and rescores as the libretto of this great opera. There are some
images in this film unlike anything you've seen before. And
actions are absolutely incredible, especially Nicole Kidman. I felt really
for these two people, and really felt they were in love. My heart was broken
in a million pieces for them every time I saw this movie, and I've seen
8 times. It is absolutely amazing, visionary, a masterpiece that
did not get the credit it deserves by critics Americans, who seem to complain
that each film is the same. However, when an original, bold, impactful
movie like this comes along, do not know what to do with him. But then again,
this really is not just a movie. I could not just film it seems to me the way this one has
, so that it reaches the very fibers of my being in a unique way
"The Wizard of Oz" never has before. Yes, the story is sad, but what is a
trip that will take you! A trip I will be sure to repeat over and over again
and again.
