In Jersey City, an African American hit man follows "Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai." He lives alone, in simplicity with homing pigeons for company, calling himself Ghost Dog. His master, who saved his life eight years ago, is part of the local mob. When the boss' daughter witnesses one of Ghost Dog's hits, he becomes expendable. The first victims are his birds, and in response, Ghost Dog goes right at his attackers but does not want to harm his master or the young woman. On occasion, he talks with his best friend, a French-speaking Haitian who sells ice cream in the park, and with a child with whom he discusses books. Can he stay true to his code? And if he does, what is his fate?

This is one of the strangest and most likable films I
.... I have seen and seen a lot, believe me.
Scene after scene was strange. I watched a surprise in the first
viewing, chuckling here and there. By the third point, I just
laughing out loud for much of it. The dark, subtle humor that by
this is as good as I have ever seen on film ....
although it can be graded more than a gangster movie than a comedy.
humor involving mainly the gangsters, who were a bunch of old men
Mafia. A crowd never expected this but they were pathetic characters.
Was especially fun to see again Henry Silva, a man who used to be an effective villain
back a large number of television programs in the 1960's. He did not say
much in this movie, but waiting on his face is price. The
fun guy, at least for me, was the mobster who sang and danced to rap music
!
The byplay between "Ghost Dog", the hero of the film
wonderfully played by Forest Whitaker, and the ice cream man, who only spoke French
, was also very fun and entertaining.
Almost all the characters in this case was a stranger, led by Whitaker played
a modern-day hit man who lives by the code of the ancient Samurai Warriors
. Also, trains and communicates through the pigeons. Eh!
He told me that this was a strange movie!
Violence is no-nonsense, however, none of laughter and played
Rambo-unlike-minded, people who were shot were hit and killed by the general
immediately.
Along the way in this strange story is a lesson or two on loyalty,
racism, philosophies, kindness, communication, etc. How much of this
you take seriously And how as a gag, depends on you, I suppose.
The more I watch this, the more I see it as clever put-on comedy ....
still sad. It is not easy to describe, but wind up getting involved with
these strangers.
The film is changing rapidly as Whitaker does in this story. One minute he is a bear-
brutally beaten-like men and the next minute, the kind of
souls.
A very unique film. The title seems a bit stupid and one you would readily dismiss
as moronic, but it's far from it. Great entertainment.
Basically, Jim Jarmush the best (and most accessible) cinema;
Forrest Whitaker best performance (and the best performance of a number of
worthy but little known character actors), the best banda sonora, better
music by the RZA, - I mean,'90 's film-making not only could get
better than this, and if you're having trouble understanding this, then read some
books and see some movies, because this is a movie that does not speak
"down" to his audience, but expects us to live up to it.
This is a film about the clash - and the potential overlap -
very different cultures. That ultimately become untethered
interweavings, is the sole ground are not yet ready to live up to the
promise of being a "multi-cultural melting pot that we have always promised
we ourselves become .... But that does not give us any right
to lose hope or stop trying.
Ghost Dog is the spirit of this possible future. We do not have to take
the worst of all cultures, which actually could bring together the best.
Magnificently written, filmed, produced - and, despite a sad end,
one of the most optimistic film about this subject that I have ever seen.
It is a good book - I recommend it.
