(biography, comedy, drama)
Harvey Pekar is file clerk at the local VA hospital. His interactions with his co-workers offer some relief from the monotony, and their discussions encompass everything from music to the decline of American culture to new flavors of jellybeans and life itself. At home, Harvey fills his days with reading, writing and listening to jazz. His apartment is filled with thousands of books and LPs, and he regularly scours Cleveland's thrift stores and garage sales for more, savoring the rare joy of a 25-cent find. It is at one of these junk sales that Harvey meets Robert Crumb, a greeting card artist and music enthusiast. When, years later, Crumb finds international success for his underground comics, the idea that comic books can be a valid art form for adults inspires Harvey to write his own brand of comic book. An admirer of naturalist writers like Theodore Dreiser, Harvey makes his American Splendor a truthful, unsentimental record of his working-class life, a warts-and-all self portrait. First published in 1976, the comic earns Harvey cult fame throughout the 1980s and eventually leads him to the sardonic Joyce Barber, a partner in a Delaware comic book store who end ups being Harvey's true soul mate as they experience the bizarre byproducts of Harvey's cult celebrity stature.

Over the years, people have read dozens of comic books:
Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, The Green Laterna, X-Men, Hulk, etc.,
seeking escape from reality, but At the same time, seeking a
relationship of those books. With "American Splendor" on the other hand,
is very different from comics. What makes it so special? It
that represent real life where it shows the character of Harvey Pekar
different situations.
"American Splendor" is a comedy / drama biography on the life of Harvey
Pekan (played by Paul Giamatti), in which the film plays like a comic book that shows
scenes that are real and fiction. Even the real Harvey
quite often makes appearances in the film to talk about his life, his wife
(Joyce) and all that kind of made him the
person he is today.
Harvey Pekar can be described as one of those characters who do not seem to
give a damn about the world. The reason
root of this character is that he is the kind of person who lives in his own world,
not give a crap about the incidents in the world, so I do not have formal
university education, work on a dead-end jobs where
future, people are still laughing at him. And yet, I do not blame him. I
Remembrance of two other films that had losers, but made an impact on society
male: "The Big Lebowski" and "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" in
that the two male characters not have to worry about anything or
go out on dates, or even friendly society (no, no, no, people).
all in all, American Splendor is a great movie. Although the film
target audience is for kids, I still encourage people to see this film
. The film also stars Hope Davis portrays Harvey's wife, Joyce.
One of the best movies!
Harvey Pekar is a filing clerk in your local hospital, who is miserable;
he is in his way out of a terrible second marriage and his only
interests are compiling records of second-hand, read and listen
Jazz. But a chance meeting with aspiring cartoonist Robert Crumb
what makes the ability of comics as an art form. Crumbs later
success inspires Harvey to write a different kind of comic - one based
in his own life, chronic absurd and sad moments of his life and
life. As his down to earth image of the working class
reality begins to generate a cult, Harvey found a new wife and
greatest fame - but real happiness? Well, that's another story.
I have never read any of the comics of Pekan and, to be honest,
have little interest in the world of comics because I am constantly postponed by
price them so that is obtained (I am a fan of Batman, but local prices
very thin for the comics are too high for me is like starting a habit).
Despite that attracted me to this movie that I
be different and offers an interesting option to carry the man to Giamatti, but, given the
not very successful appeal of the film, hardly had
any time in my local cinema and I missed it and had to catch
on DVD. When I sat down to see that I was immediately taken by the
design of the film - the opening of comics and, more importantly, the
and frank narrative scenes from Pekan real (and others). This gives
the film is much more interesting appeal because, although we do not know
him, we all feel that this is a real person we are seeing
- And indeed, he is.
not have read the comic itself I can only go beyond what the film and
other reviewers have told me that they are like and, from that
understanding, I think the film is stronger for having
basically the same strengths as the comic. That is, is very
and sandy soil, without flowers or sparkling scenes, but with dialogue
a simple ingenuity to the strange collection of characters. This warts and all
presentation moves forward in a very good story of Pekan, but
the ultimate strength of the film is its collection of characters -
like the comic, are history of the lives of Pekan and are
heart of the film. It's hard to describe, but the collection
bitterness, psychosis, nerds and other weird makes for a good movie
is interesting, humorous and, above all effectively, it is true.
Giamatti is not material, but the man who is here shows that more
that Comic Relief and offered a good performance
all - not even let the presence of the real Pekan
put him out of his way. Pekan itself is also good - very easy to listen to but
also unhappy and not the kind of person you talk to at work. The
supporting cast is also very strong and has a range of minor characters
that make the film joined greater than the sum of its parts
. As I said, it is difficult to pigeonhole this movie and the cast, but
that seems to work, and even people who have never heard of Pekan (ie -
me) can enjoy it.
generally very different movie about a strange man who succeeded
get much more successful than he ever though possible, but still never ceases
change their discontent and normal forms. It's fun, ably structured
populated with weird and ordinary that make fun of seeing. Kudo
to the director to get the uninitiated in the film with such ease
and management to produce a film that is surprisingly strange
find in a multiplex, but strangely that is accessible to most people .
