Humbert Humbert, a divorced British professor of French literature, travels to small-town America for a teaching position. He allows himself to be swept into a relationship with Charlotte Haze, his widowed and sexually famished landlady, whom he marries in order that he might pursue the woman's 14-year-old flirtatious daughter, Lolita, with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love, but whose affections shall be thwarted by a devious trickster named Clare Quilty.

An important part of Stanley Kubrick's genius was his ability to translate
a literary work in a visual style. It shows nothing more brilliantly than in
Lolita and A Clockwork Orange.
Lolita is perhaps the most impressive achievement, in the style of Nabokov
is complex and multi-layered. However, Kubrick captures the effect that
camera angles and movements, at the time and point of view.
The broader layer of Nabokov's novel, the parable of an ageing culture
Europe trying to revivify itself debauching of the culture of young seducer
americas, is really missing in film. But everything else is there,
despite the fact that the movie departs from the exact facts of the novel.
does not mean that the film depends on the novel. It is in itself quite easily
. But it succeeds brilliantly in conveying ideas and feelings
that are at the heart of the novel, and makes it completely in cinema
terms. If the films are based on the works of literature, this is the way to
do, and how they almost never done.
What surreal, dreamlike world Stanley Kubrick created with this intriguing
movie!
The book, a renowned classical Century 20, is at times disturbing,
hysterically funny, erotic uncomfortable, and heartbreakingly sad. The film, made in
60,
captures many of the same feelings generated by the book - but censorship
time could only allow Kubrick to suggest the most intimate and
erotic aspects of the book - which gets slyly doing. It's hard to believe now
but when this film was released, it was felt that it was incredibly
provacative and absolutely for adults only.
The film became his own artistic statement --- Kubrick is not limited to
try to recreate the scenes and the history of the book - although much of it is
there - but
uses period music, speech, clothing and Mannerisms to create their own
imaginative and fascinating world. At the same time, we are confident of doing until the end
caring about the characters. Within the exceptional cast, the headnote
performance
gives Shelly Winters - his character is both funny and so sad and achingly
pathetic. This is a real tour-de-force acting. In several cases we go
laughing to their reality to their rejection, to feel so bad about it.
She creates a truly memorable character. "
The film ranks up there with all the films of Kubrick spectacfular
made during his surprising and very unique career --- each of his films is so distinctive
< ; br> - and Lolita is one of the most distinctive of them
everything.
