The patriarch (Jeff Daniels) of an eccentric Brooklyn family claims to once have been a great novelist, but he has settled into a teaching job. When his wife (Laura Linney) discovers a writing talent of her own, jealousy divides the family, leaving two teenage sons to forge new relationships with their parents. Linney's character begins dating her younger son's tennis coach. Meanwhile, Daniels' character has an affair with the student his older son is pursuing.

It is interesting to read all the comments and how each reviewer has
find something unique that calls for them. Some reviewers have focused on children
or father or mother. Different scenes have been
noted, almost none of more than one reviewer. What this tells me is that
the writer / director has produced a story in which all the scenes
contribute to the whole. This was my experience watching the film. This
is credible, well shot, great backgrounds, all in all a pleasure for
someone who loves movies and can handle some quite crude
dialog / situations ..... and nothing was blown up.
I would recommend this only for adults or a teenager very mature. The
language and situations are difficult, but as I said, very credible. I
identified with much of what adolescents in this movie are going through and my sympathy
definitely on the side of them against their
self-involved and self-indulgent parents. This is the best role I've ever seen in
Jeff Daniels and men have known in my life as his character
I think it was a ground-with his image. There was no weak characterizations
with any of the actors, for that matter.
More acute that I have experienced in a long time, this film captures
the process of inheritance of personality within families. The
interaction and influence between Bernard and Walt
is almost painful to watch sometimes, but it is completely rich. Beyond that only father / son dynamic
, the story is so poignant without ever sappy - a real
achieving a family drama involving divorce. Nothing you
hit on the head. Nothing seems too forced. While there are a lot of
confusion, unrest and alienation, a feeling of love shines through,
and I could help, but not be tied to all the characters.
I recommend this movie without conditions.
