On Halloween 1963, the small town of Haddonfield is shocked when six-year-old Michael Myers returns from trick-or-treating and for some unknown reason stabs his older sister to death with a big kitchen knife and is found by his parents staring into space with the bloody knife in his hand. Sent to a mental institution, Michael spends the next 15 years just sitting, still staring into space despite the best efforts of his Doctor, Dr. Samuel Loomis. Now, on October 30th 1978, something triggers Michael off and during a storm manages to steal a car from Dr. Loomis and Nurse Marion (who was coming to take Michael to a court to keep him locked up) and goes back to Haddonfield where he steals a white mask. There, Laurie Stode, Micheal's younger sister, finds that Michael is stalking her during the day (at school, at her home etc - but she doesn't know who he is.) As Dr. Loomis arrives and with the Sheriff frantically looks for Michael he doesn't know that Laurie is baby-sitting Lindsey and Tommy and that Laurie's friends Annie, Lynda and Bob are disappearing one by one...

To begin with, this is a movie twenty years. Few films remain suspended as
today as he did when he left. (see: Night of the Living Dead -
had people running from the theaters when released, but is very tame today).
Obviously, a movie fan reared on the rules of the films of today are not
for finding enjoyment of these 'classic' movies. But today when watching Halloween
perhaps helps to consider a few things: Halloween is a low-budget film
(ie: bad acting, poor special effects) for only $ 300000. It
is not a product of Hollywood, but a handful 20 years of age. This was the first film to feature
the Boogeyman not Die that has been ripped off time and time again
Friday at 13, Elm Street, Scream, etc. You're used to it < br> Now, Halloween, but did so first. Even Scream stealing the aspect of
villain on Halloween. The theme of teenagers are stalked by a madman has been booted
numerous occasions and (again, it did Halloween first)
but what separates Halloween of imitators is playing in traditional
fears: the thing that not Die; Boogeyman coming to get,
being followed and stalked, the groom returned to the room under a bedsheet
- And it's not really him; someone hidden in the car. ..
all things that have made our skin crawl in real life at one time or another.
Halloween watching again tonight for the first time in many years I found
again on the edge of my seat. Classic? Hell, yes. Maybe not a generation that feels
Scream is a "good" horror movie, but a classic
none the less.
I was 20 in 1978, and saw at the opening this weekend. I knew nothing of
, and after growing up in the old Hammer films, followed by a period of
almost anything, this was quite pleasant surprise. It really worked! I was
check the back seat in cars, gave me a sinking feeling when I lost my
keys, etc. The low death toll and the relative lack of blood, compared with
post slasher films , I really admire the efficiency with which
created the atmosphere of order and that kept me on the edge, and made me jump to the right places
. Of course, not jump over it, but I have fun
remember what it was like seeing that now when the cliches were fresh and new
. I river in 'horror' flicks of años'30 y'40, but when they were
again, I bet they are something. And I bet another 20 years, today's young children are
Scream / IKWYDLS, et al, to be tame and too passe, at least
compared to what you (and I) then be watching!
I am surprised by the number of people half my age who want
could have been around to see this film when brand new!
Looking back, Halloween, probably more frightened when I was new, others have
horror films, when they were new. Horror movies are indebted to
Halloween to break new ground, and I can not wait for the next
horror movie you'll do something on a similar scale.
