In most cases, this is a "modest" film, with only a few very brief shots
a bare chest and other non-frontal nudity. Even the
major violence occurs in a way ... Hitchcockian recognized, but
off camera. (There are several scenes in which Karl is beaten by Paul
but are on a par with a typical western television.)
The underlying problem is that this film is very faithful to the facts as they are known
this case. This disturbs apparently a large number of people.
No effort is made to justify the actions of Karla and Paul, although most
the story is narrated from the selfish standpoint of Karla herself.
It gives us no idea of what might have been in their past
that would induce them to act this way and commit such horrible acts
. My reaction to this movie, being very familiar with the case
itself is not one of revulsion or horror, but one of great sadness.
These are some really sick people. Be sure to watch the extras on the DVD
because help illuminate what actually happened after the trial and
reinforce the fact that the courts and the jury no cree Karla
for a moment.
As Canada and the fact that this movie is not widely available until
here I am compelled to offer some observations on what many consider a tragic story
exploited for financial gain for any purpose.
Those of us who lived this story back in the early
1990 and the subsequent trial of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka can attest to the degree of displeasure
many considered crimes these two tasks. The film
is correct in many respects on details of the story, but not
mistake that the data were much more sadistic and brutal
of what has been portrayed in this movie. At least for those of us who have
read transcripts of videotapes that Bernardo had his
victims, and one can hardly blame the director
omit these details or forcing an actor to play that role.
My only beef with this movie, however, is that it does attempt to paint a picture of Karla Homolka
be like a victim here as Bernardo, and although
nobody can deny that it was under his influence and subject to
this violent, to suggest that she had no control over this situation and simply
along the label for the trip is to suggest that she
Was as a victim of Bernardo as the two murder victims. Those
versed in this case know much better and the role they may have played
the deaths of Kristen French (aka Kaitlyn Ross) is something that will probably never know
as are those who suggest that she
was directly responsible for killing the second victim.
The acting in this movie is nothing remarkable, but given the nature of the roles played here
surprisingly found anyone to play these two
start. Due to the difficult issue I will let the
mediocre acting to make it happen because a lot better than almost
as saying the players themselves perhaps a little too immersed in
characters who are more disgusting and if
not frankly disgusting.
Ultimately, 'Karla' is a film that you only see once
Personally, I do not think this was ever intended to be necessarily a movie
For mass consumption either at the theater or your local videostore.
That said, Canadians should have the right to see this film for
so that the state vs. be inclined to tell us what is appropriate or inappropriate for our
pleasure of sight, as there are films about
the market much more worrying about real life events that
I hope this film could never be.
