First a word of warning. A number of people who would be best advised to avoid
Van Helsing. If you dislike cgi, if you're a purist,
if you're looking for something "realistic", or if you're looking for a slower
movement, understated film that is a profound study of characters, you
more than likely hate this movie.
Set around the turn of the century, 20, Van Helsing has the
holder hero (Hugh Jackman) taking a break from his usual "monster slayer
" activities, are commissioned by the Catholic Church,
pursuit of a great plot initiated by Dracula (Richard Roxburg) involving
the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), the Wolf Man (Will Kempe),
and the last two surviving members of a family of Transylvania
that has long been fighting the vampire.
Van Helsing is a fast, computer graphics-laden
horror / adventure / fantasy film where Universal re-imagines its core
stable of classic horror characters. I really like CGI,
'm not a purist, I love the genre - I'm not looking for realism, and I love
fast action-oriented thrill rides as much if not more so than the
love character studies.
As for remakes character, Van Helsing becomes a stain
Matrix retro-style macho action hero, James Bond/007,
part Indiana Jones, Part Buffy the vampire slayer with a secret
Catholic Church in order to fill the Watcher's Council Bond and the "Q Branch
" combined. Dracula becomes a suave, scheming,
mad scientist who looks like a hero novel of love. Frankenstein's Monster becomes much
closer to Mary Shelley's representation of an intelligent, talkative,
tormented, slapdash victim of a medical mistake. And the Werewolf,
the wolf, becomes a CGI generated more than size, super-agile, hyperactive
beast. That should turn off all the purists.
aspect of the movie is exuberant, with lots of unusual point of view shots,
exotic locales and computer-generated environments.
CGI is used extensively for the human characters in the film, as well as the
monsters - is frequently employed so they can defy physics and acrobatics
impressive, far-reaching "computer camera" transitions. Van Helsing
is a good argument for such a comprehensive digital assistance, as many of the visual
would simply be impossible to achieve by any other means
and replacement of some of the creatures with mechanicals,
animatronics, special effects and makeup as
would have caused the film to go very far and along its scandalous
estimated budget of 160 million euros.
The plot, although not in deep characterization, could not be more complete
events and action. Combined with the extravagant visual and rapidly changing
, alborotada places, the result is epic in scope.
Director / writer Stephen Sommers, who is also responsible for
remake of another classic image of a universal character to the mummy (1999) and
The Mummy Returns (2001) (probably why no mummy
is present in here), Van Helsing begins in black and white to the scene
wonderfully recreates the feeling of James Whale Frankenstein-lensed
films, including references to a series of shots, scenes and characters
of the classics. After
titles, we are operating in a world full of color wing
The Wizard of Oz, while we are treated to a short matter of establishing the scene of Van
Helsing fighting Mr Hyde in the bell tower of Notre Dame. Then Sommers
quickly whisks us off to the Vatican, where Van Helsing
receives its orders.
This whirlwind start can be almost overwhelming - which is undoubtedly
visually - and it takes a moment to get to ours and
catch breath, but once they settle in the Square Transylvanian village, we
enraptured by the story and pace reaches
a more sustainable level. Although fantastic in the background, the proceedings of the
principle of the cast help anchor the film in "reality". Jackman, Kate Beckinsale
, Roxburgh, David Wenham Henley and turn every shade
proceedings involving the depth of character that the film does not
have time to study them thoroughly.
The intense action throughout the film along with the cgi
spectacular and sweeping camera movements often Van Helsing gives an idea
somewhere between a comic book and a movie video game. This fact could
to turn some viewers away, but as innovative, suspenseful, exciting film
art, this is years ahead of most other recent versions. In fact,
sophisticated technological wizardry and epic storytelling entrancing
is something that reminds the Lord of the Rings films, which makes me wonder what other
viewers see in those who allow them to consistently high
IMDb sit in the Top 250 list, while Van Helsing
struggles to achieve a slightly above average rating. Perhaps Van Helsing
deserves a more tempered first or second: those who have
summarily dismissed because of unreasonable expectations and prejudices
. This really is an excellent film that deserves to be appreciated
least at technical level, and
should be easy enough to enjoy their action-oriented storytelling prowess
as well.
Having seen the film (more than once) I must say that I think
the person who wrote the comment "a stupid and very disappointing
Movie" is being silghtly child. Unable to see a film like Van Helsing
without taking it with a pinch of salt - is a film with
vampires, werewolves and the monster in frankenstine all at once for
goodness it. Therefore, we can not go thinking that in a literal sense.

day it does not matter, because if you go with the right attitude and you
Enjoy it, then what does it matter if it's a bit "off" in some places.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film and certainly recommend it to anyone
one who likes action / fantasy films and is for a little fun!
