Frankie Dunn has trained and managed some incredible fighters during a lifetime spent in the ring. The most important lesson he teaches his boxers is the one that rules life: above all, always protect yourself. In the wake of a painful estrangement from his daughter, Frankie has been unwilling to let himself get close to anyone for a very long time. His only friend, Scrap, an ex-boxer who looks after Frankie's gym, knows that beneath his gruff exterior is a man who has been seeking, for the past 25 years, the forgiveness that somehow continues to elude him. Then Maggie Fitzgerald walks into his gym...

Clint Eastwood is a man of faith. He is an artist and
experience is safe enough to have a deep faith in the audience that he is trying to achieve
. He is also a master of omission, of the left-out
detail / line, trusting his gut that his audience is willing to participate in his films
by exercising his imagination; who never wants
any aspect of history to be "dumb-down"
ready for consumption. In fact, their confidence in the public to use their own minds
to fill the gaps is like a gift from part ownership in the film. "
Million Dollar Baby" is a beautiful gift, and if a masterpiece film-making.
Eastwood plays Frankie Dunn, an elderly boxing trainer, manager, and expert
"cut man 'who runs a gym and is learning Gaelic on the side. The
is a nice enough guy, but can not seem to shake the ghosts of guilt
in his past (some are in, some not-too). His guilt / shame is a constant
just below the surface and gives some
cold outside, sometimes frozen. However, as played by Eastwood, you know Dunn's
aware of their own situation, but simply do not know how the ice melts. Or
most importantly, whether it is worthy of such a merger.
Enter Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank). She is a thirty-something trailer trash
women Southwest Missouri. An unlikely hero for sure. But for my money
, Maggie is the generation of Rocky. That may seem easy,
simplistic and over-reaching comparison, but the parallels are deep, clear and
crowd. Like many people, Maggie's dream (being a professional boxer
) is always just beyond their reach, yet she can not give up
. She works as a waitress to make ends meet (or at least the ends are almost touching
), but spends all his free time training. Like Dunn,
Maggie has its own ghost haunting him and, through these ghosts that
link stricter than super glue. The heart and work (
incalculably huge quantities) which came into Swank Maggie are becoming unnoticeable.
It's a silly phrase, but it's as if she was born to play this part.
It fits like a glove. The real parallel life of his relationship with Eastwood
no doubt played a role in their ability to connect with the character of
relation to Dunn. However, this in no way diminishes his achievement.
She is brilliant.
Dunn Morgan Freeman plays his right hand (Scrape) in the gym, and
reprises a role similar to Red "Shawshank Redemption." Also
voices omniscient narration of the story, the Network. Like Dunn,
Maggie, which is similar bruised, but somehow less profound. The
is there when both need support and help to achieve together.
I think anyone acting in movies today who can lead the goodness and wisdom
through friendship and support better than Freeman. It also serves to bring another brand
Eastwood - "Banta '. Even when the issues are heavy
, Eastwood sense of humor is never completely absent and that he and Freeman
spend time with others, like Bacon and Fishburne
"Mystic River" . These three characters together to create a beautiful and
true, albeit small, family unity lifelong themes of Eastwood and
"blurring of lines" are in full screen: good vs. evil, right vs.
Evil, the role of violence, redemption, guilt / shame more
previous acts, even God and death. Never one for easy answers,
their version of truth lies in the shadow, literally. Filmmaker Tom Stern
crafts characters in the shadows, changing inside and outside light.
There is a grey area between light and darkness, where
anything approaching the truth is on hold, and this is where Eastwood takes us,
then leaves us to think there. "Million Dollar Baby" is a shadow play. As
done as "Unforgiven" and "Mystic River" and yet even more
staff, this movie is a triumph of short stories. As
says Bacon's character in "Mystic River", "… the successes and just keep on COMIN '.
The film is excellent. Hillary Swank deserves the Oscar for his performance
. I have not seen much of it lately and I am very pleased that
she was chosen for this film. She seems natural for this role. Gustar
that does not even have to act, she just left their own emotions take over.
She stole every scene when she was. Clint Eastwood is one of a omprobar
actor and his direction of movies is even better. He is 75 years
and I hope he has another 10 years to make a good movie in him.
Morgan Freeman is a great actor who never seems to get the recognition it deserves
. Tell the others to see it because it is not in the top 10
list of films seen last week. I am concerned the matter is
too deep for most people and withdrew to accommodate some
lame-brain like the film Fat Albert.
