Set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990's Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) - an ex Mercenary from Zimbabwe - and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) - a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories as different as any can be, until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon - who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields - has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Antwerp, Belgium,
place many consider "the diamond capital of the world."
Never before or since I was in a place where I was surrounded by so much
"Bling". Shops had so many diamonds on the screen could be
think that should be better maintained in some European version of Fort Knox.
The film Blood Diamond puts a new twist in Antwerp, the diamond industry
and expensive stones that you might be wearing around his neck
, ring on his finger, or ears (mine are cubic-Zs).
Located in the West Africa country of Sierra Leone during the 1990's, this
historical-adventure-drama concerns a time when the country is in turmoil
. Lords of war, diamond dealers and the union to play all the roles
in an exodus of refugees, and the murder and enslavement of men to work
the diamond fields. The title refers to diamonds that are harvested,
smuggling and trade to finance the purchase of weapons used in civil
War.
Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) stars as a fisherman who has torn his family
and instead of being killed, is sent to work mining diamonds
location and hides a large stone. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio
), a former mercenary, diamond smuggler, facilitator-name-it,
're looking to score with that stone and leave the business forever.
Writer Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) is tired of writing stories shallow
less than newsworthy events;
she is looking for information on the major players in the diamond trade. They all come together
at a brisk pace, adventure-packed piece of cinema that is
brutal at times, but never boring. The film has a pleasant
unexpected ending, something difficult to take in a movie of this type
.
Director / Producer Edward Zwick is probably the best in Hollywood to
taking a big budget film with a historical theme and carefully
relay a message without lecturing his audience.
His previous works include a history of the first black-USA Civil War in company
"Gloria", a film, which led to Denzel Washington won his first Oscar
. Zwick takes credit for works such as The Last Samurai,
Shakespeare in Love, Traffic and Courage Under Fire. He is second to none when it comes to balancing
a historic event with action, drama entertainment.
Edward Zwick is one of the few directors who still works in LA
the Hollywood establishment is still capable of putting out good quality film.
Blood Diamond exit, their "bling" can never see it again.
With little in the negative column, I want to disperse
first: "The Blood Diamond 'can be fairly accused of" bleeding heart
syndrome' (more than in a bit), has some minor issues of pace and with
seems unsure how to end. The end they chose the
film extends too far, seems forced and is in tacks. The most natural is ending
in the mountainside - you know what I mean when you see it. They said
things, positives are much greater and this film shows two towers
performances. Djimon Hounsou is nothing less than incredible
and I am surprised that if it does not consider Oscar time. Secondly,
although he had little patience for him before, Leonardo DiCaprio
has really impressed me this year. With his performances in "dead" and now
'Blood Diamond', I believe it is necessary to reassess my own prejudices against him
. I am becoming a fan.
Some of the first comments that I read painted 'Blood Diamond' hysterical
as far left of the head cause paradise. They suggest that
conflict diamond situation has been exaggerated and totally distorted
. I do not know if that's the case. The film makes a
arguments but I do not base my decisions on political and economic
movies I see. My interest here is to see how the characters
respond to adversity and a horrifyingly dark and terrible situation. The
political agenda of the film is not as grandiose as cloyingly
I am afraid it is. This is a film that, although
concerned with the political situation in Africa, focuses more on how the obsessive search for a large
rare pink diamond that consumes those too close to it.
DiCaprio is excellent as Rhodesia (his description) and mercenaries
arms dealer working in Sierra Leone. Hounsou is a fisherman who receives
involved in the civil war raging around him and discovers a pink diamond
that could save - or destroy - both he and his family.
Jennifer Connelly plays a journalist trying to discover whether a large multi-national diamond company
is knowingly in the market for conflict diamonds.
Jennifer Connelly seems to have the worst dialogue. When told
that Americans are partly to blame for conflict diamonds
she responds with a line about 'not all girls want a fancy wedding. "It makes
look naive at best and foolish at worst. She usually manages to save
the nature of any of these destinations and
but also manages to avoid self-righteousness when it comes to some of the films more morally flexible
characters. Hounsou is great and despair in
his character as he tries to find his family crackles on the screen. The
is cagey and understands you have to do to survive. His character
is not over whether to play servile to be kept alive. And when
provoked to violence, the result was absolutely chilling. Largely
are smaller roles as a mercenary Colonel Arnold Vosloo, Stephen Collins
as a diplomat and Michael Sheen as an executive at a diamond company.
Excellent performances by all.
'Blood Diamond' critical? I think that is the wrong question.
The film is both a character study of all men pursuing the
pink diamond and what effect they have on, but it is also a character study
Africa. The tragic and heartsick, 'Blood Diamond' is drenched with
cynicism and defeatism. Why is there poverty and exploitation? "TIA," explains DiCaprio to
Connelly, "This is Africa." In contrast to a film like
'Traffic', 'Blood Diamond' not Wallowa in despair. Some of the
characters can be cynical, but the film itself is not looking for hope.
The heart of the image is the human cost. Personality see
diamond wealth and are destroyed by it. The film shares a lot
thematically with a film like "Treasure of the Sierra Madre. '
Praise for a film of high quality.
