Berlin, July, 1945. Journalist Jake Geismer arrives to cover the Potsdam conference, issued a captain's uniform for easier passage. He also wants to find Lena, an old flame who's now a prostitute desperate to get out of Berlin. He discovers that the driver he's assigned, a cheerful down-home sadist named Corporal Tully, is Lena's keeper. When the body of a murdered man washes up in Potsdam (within the Russian sector), Jake may be the only person who wants to solve the crime: U.S. personnel are busy finding Nazis to bring to trial, the Russians and the Americans are looking for German rocket scientists, and Lena has her own secrets.

Steven Soderbergh

Soderbergh is a director with a decent amount of guts, but not much
talent. Here is making a Hollywood film classic, reminiscent of
The third man and Casablanca, by imitation, or at least trying to
mimic the classic style of cinematography, by scratching the negative
, After the dialogue recorded in mono (I think) and having
actors deliver performances along the lines of the study days. The
honestly trick does not work all that well. Lovers of classic cinema
will realise how different film-making is that of los'40s. How
hazy cinematography compared with Casablanca or The Third Man (
It looks like you're watching a movie in a black and white television). Or how much more
swearing and sexual content that exists in the film. Yes,
the trick is a little weak and harmful to the rest of the film
. Otherwise, is a good mystery. There is a big one. The pace
delays in the middle, and the mystery only begins to make sense
right near the end, when much of the public has stopped caring.
The film's strongest asset is Cate Blanchett, who channels
Marlene Dietrich. It's easy nowadays one of the best actresses, and the only triumph
film of the film is lighting her face - she is
drop-dead beautiful. I will be hanged, probably by the nostalgists, but I would love
take it - both in his acting skills and beauty - most of the lead actresses
of Casablanca and The Third Man. George Clooney is decent,
but his character is rather two-dimensional. The hero is a very boring.
I really liked Tobey Maguire, however. His character is much more
interesting, and I wish it could have been more in the film. I absolutely
beings climatic sequence, but the film continues by
too long after that. Blanchett the big revelation at the end does not feel
anticlimactic.
I went to see this film with relatively low expectations. The company
I have been dragged me to see Inland Empire that I
record as saying is the worst movie I paid to see.
Should also remember that this movie was very limited freedom
in both sides of the lagoon since won an Oscar and director
three big names in the cast is not a good sign, so I went to
with fairly low expectations
Maybe my low expectations worked in the film because it is a very effective film
favour black / political thriller. Soderberg has brought a metonym
to history. He runs black and white and has mixed his own
material filmed scenes with a balance of a devastated Berlin.
Remember all those old movies where someone is driving a car and
is painfully obvious that it is filmed in a joint study with a projection screen? Well
there is a scene with Toby McGuire and George Clooney in a jeep
where the same technique is used. The film also contains a title sequence
straight from the 1940's and has shot scenes with overlong
duration as the film of yesteryear
misfortune to do Soderbergh draws attention to the
fact that Paul Attanasio's script was not written in 40 years
because there is a sex scene and several uses of the word F. If you're making a movie
that is a tribute to the 1940 film should not go the whole hog and
write a screenplay in the same way? Not triggered the producer
