This is the kind of film that is easy to bread, but it deserves better. Yes,
premise is familiar, the plot is formulas, the characters seem
you've met before.

But ...

"The devil is in the details", as they say, and this image just enough
surprises, just enough charm, fine acting long enough to make worthwhile
Viewing. The films do not have to be real to be worthwhile, you just have to
is about real things. The questions "Mona Lisa Smile" covers are still very much with us
, and can cause considerable debate at home.
This film is sufficiently respectful of its subject matter and well executed
enough to make it a much better way to spend your time than most of what is out there now
. I do not think the sourpusses, this is a good'un.
* * * There is no specific spoilers, but some * * conceptual notions that might be considered saboteurs
* Julia Roberts is at a crossroads
disconcerting in his career. She is edging beyond the era of
"Pretty Woman" roles, however, hardly ready for the role of midwife. "
Mona Lisa Smile", where the university plays an instructor for departure
conservative east coast, seems to be the perfect vehicle for Roberts
make a transition, unfortunately, the result is a journey filled of potholes in which Roberts
itself seems decidedly uncomfortable, and that becomes
only a faint reflection of their opposite sex inspiration, "
Dead Poets Society". Roberts plays Katherine Watson, a liberal-minded west-coast
professor of art that meets the opportunity to take more than one
similar position at Wellesley College, an ultraconservative
women's college in 1953 . Watson arrives, hoping to "make a difference" in the
lives of some of the smartest women in the country by extending the
concept of "traditional" attitudes about art in attitudes about life,
and lives of women in particular.

Roberts seems strangely intimidated by a role in which she is overtaken by
a strong set of colleagues (including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles
), a school powerfully dislike
administrator, and even the "house mother" in his bedroom Instructor,
played by Marcia Gay Harden. She seems at ease only in the film's lone
romantic scene with her, as she lounges lazily in front of a fireplace
with his long hair flowing down her face.

Kirsten Dunst as Betty Warren, spoiled and naive daughter of a
Wellseley board member, is the antagonist, the lightning rod for
convention and propriety, and carries a pen as a weapon
against his enlightened Watson's west coast intrusion. We ultimately see his poison pen
serve as a foreshadowing of his own anger to discover
his own life idyllic, presumably, in light of potential uncapped
his companions. At the end of the film, she has grown and changed more than
Roberts.

The film ends with an attempt of a great sendoff for the rebels
instructor agreement with the Dead Poets Society made on the desktop "
Captain my Captain," but characters are not drawn with enough depth to make us
sympathetic with the loss of his mentor, and the scene is
only visually satisfactory. In any case, we are more drawn to the
strength of relations between the students themselves rather than
the instructor. When "Poets" said Robin Williams character
deep into the lives of their students, Watson's relationship
student is manufactured at best, strained and intrusive at worst.

The film deserves credit for not unexpected casting itself as a unilateral
message contemporary feminism. Allows Watson, as illustrated
professor, to deliver his message of the potential of women in
non-traditional roles, but also allows one of his students to assert the right to choose
that traditional role without condescension.

It would be too hard to make the film as a failure. This is a story written
decently, if too thin - always a risk with a history fraught with numerous
central characters, but often a masterpiece if done right, as
in Dead Poets . "Smile" is beautifully photographed in the picturesque
northeast, and Roberts' supporting cast is very questionable
the strength of the film. However, for an actress who has made a career out of stealing scenes with an estimated
enamel, drying in the shadow of his fellow stars
be characterized as nothing more than a below par performance. "Smile" ends
being a "Dead Poets" for suffragettes, but is not nearly as well
.

And that's a shame.
