Waters and his elite squadron of tactical specialists are forced to choose between their duty and their humanity, between following orders by ignoring the conflict that surrounds them, or finding the courage to follow their conscience and protect a group of innocent refugees. When the democratic government of Nigeria collapses and the country is taken over by a ruthless military dictator, Waters, a fiercely loyal and hardened veteran is dispatched on a routine mission to retrieve a Doctors Without Borders physician, Dr. Lena Kendricks. Dr. Kendricks, an American citizen by marriage, is tending to the victims of the ongoing civil war at a Catholic mission in a remote village. When Waters arrives, however, Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave unless he promises to help deliver the villagers to political asylum at the nearby border. If they are left behind, they will be at the mercy of the enormous rebel army. Waters is under strict orders from his commanding officer Captain Bill Rhodes to remain disengaged from the conflict. But as he and his men witness the brutality of the rebels first-hand, they are won over to Dr. Kendricks' cause and place their lives at risk by agreeing to escort the villagers on a perilous trek through the dense jungle. As they move through the countryside on foot, Waters' team, experts at evasion and concealment, are inexplicably and ferociously pursued by an army of rebels. They are confounded until they discover that, among the refugees, is the sole survivor of the country's previous ruling family, whom the rebels have been ordered to eliminate at all costs. Waters and his small band of soldiers must weigh the life of one man against their own and the refugees they feel obliged to protect.

While far from the classic movie that I was very surprised by how good
I found this film. My partner and I have both spent some time working in Africa
and she has a special interest in human rights and humanitarian intervention
. When we saw the preview for this movie
we both let out audible groans and rolled eyes aplenty: americas saves
... all again. The film was immediately consigned to the "
I do not see that if you pay me bin ... "But we did see us and quite enjoyed
.

Apart from a bit too sexual intercourse between Willis and
doctor (who almost kiss - is simply not necessary) the movie runs along quite well
and becomes a very tense, exciting and quite moving.

Most importantly I've always felt a thought provoking idea what
"ethnic cleansing" can really be like, something that film makers
hesitate to explore. Time war atrocities are one of those things that we all have an idea
fair, but about who is rarely portrayed. This film
did a very good job of describing horrific atrocities without being unduly gory
or worse, sensationalist and use of humiliation and subordination
subtle as a weapon was demonstrated.

Technicalities aside, the soldiers were worried about convincing
refugees without open "We are all these goddamn heroes, not us?"
positions. All main topics were totally avoided, not a single
stars and stripes to be seen, not even the slightest hint of patriotic zeal
, not mournful brass, but many sections of Hans "I really
need some new material after Gladiator "Zimmer melodies from Africa. Violence
is visceral, without being excessively bloody or stylized, and
was a sentimentality that deftly avoid being affected.

Most importantly Bruce Willis managed to avoid being Bruce Willis
for 80% of the time.

The closest thing I would like to compare this movie is Black Hawk Down.
however, BHD cuneiforme is firmly in the genre of action and
this really is not. Yup, there is gunfire and violence itself but did not get
we approach, which I think is a great thing.

My advice: grab the DVD version, see the movie, after seeing the trailer
/ previews included on the disc - you wonder if
watching the same movie, only the trailer does not do it justice.
The world we live in is a dangerous, unstable, and nowhere is
this more evident than in Africa, where much of our
world, including AIDS, is said to originate. In fact, about the only thing that
can not be found in Africa is oil, which makes americas
interest in the region difficult to imagine, let alone an explanation. Tan
when we are presented with a story about a war in Africa, only
is why we must ask ourselves why we see the American soldiers.

Bruce Willis offers a yield underacted
deliciously as the leader of an infantry unit sent to retrieve a handful of U.S. citizens.
Things are complicated when the primary objective refuses to leave without
dozens of their patients. Instead of merely escorting a woman
territory to secure the match ends in a rush to the border with Cameroon
with considerable territorial force in the search. Exactly why this
force pursued them, we do not know until the weather
battles are about to take place, but it works.

Indeed, the actors here are not even noticeable, perhaps with the exception of Tom Skerritt
, looking as though he spent his salary on diet pills. Instead,
places and the sumptuous cinematography, along with the action,
are the stars of this movie. This is a good old-fashioned action film,
Despite its very relevant story. What makes
emphasize is that instead of the modern action where nobody can see enough about what is happening to
to make sense or matter, we have our action scenes of the old
fashion. Chorros blood, detailed pictures of weapons going off, or weapons
surprising meat, are a reality rather than a much lamented
requirement unfulfilled.

There are some problems, but they are minor in the grand scheme of things
. When one sample warplanes dropping air-ground weapons against
is usually an idea to get those weapons. The use of air-to-air missile
drop napalm, for example, is not. At least the dire
action films of the 1980's used weapons in a way that was convincing.
The believability of a command that allows such violations
orders is very difficult to imagine, to say the least. Moreover,
bearing in mind that these minor lapses occur once or twice during a period of two hours
film, this can be overlooked.

I gave Tears of the Sun seven out of ten. It is not at a
Verhoeven action film, or even an action film Cameron. It is, in
Moreover, a good piece of entertainment with a dignified and humane border,
with sequences that have been fired competent. That puts it ahead of
a lot of films already on the market today.
