'It's Monopoly out there'. Jason Staebler, The King of Marvin Gardens, has gone directly to jail, lives on the Boardwalk and fronts for the local mob in Atlantic City. He is also a dreamer who asks his brother, David, a radio personality from Philadelphia to help him build a paradise on a Pacific Island - asking him to believe in yet another of his dreams, yet another of his get-rich-quick schemes. But luck is against them both and the game ends badly - real life reduced to radio drama.

A truly great movie and, unfortunately, overlooked and under evaluation, monitoring
Five Easy Pieces Nicholson and showing their most impressive. To take much better ignition
Atlantic City for the Louis Malle film of that name. Incredible acting
of Nicholson, Dern, Burstyn ... great direction and cinamatography. The
the film is set in a pre-casino Atlantic City, a sort of Coney Island
perfected.
A film of real actors who rarely see more. Perhaps
hard to see because they still immensely rewarding. A film that perfectly captures the
time and place. Dern plays a role on the top Hustler, while Nicholson,
all things, plays an intellectual radio dweeb. Go to ... see ... "Nobody
read more ... "
You can see this movie without sound, you can watch it on the original English
without understanding a word - remains a great experience.
The actors and their surroundings melt as a whole, which has one
goal: To show the beauty of decay. Atlantic City (in your state in the early seventies
) is shown as an impasse, a city to die in. In The King of Marvin Gardens
Rafelson used Atlantic City as Italian director Luchino Visconti
Venice used in some of his films.
This is one of the few genuine, serious colour film I know.
This is a delight to see how much care was taken with the actor
cabinets, the staging and with the appearance of the sky at each
scene. Ellen Burstyn (actually one of the great screen beauties americas)
shines. Of course, those who symbolize the beauty of decay. Well, beauty is more
that decay in this case, looks beautiful Burstyn however
tries hard not to.
