Opening with the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, members of the 2nd Ranger Battalion under Cpt. Miller fight ashore to secure a beachhead. Amidst the fighting, two brothers are killed in action. Earlier in New Guinea, a third brother is KIA. Their mother, Mrs. Ryan, is to receive all three of the grave telegrams on the same day. The United States Army Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, is given an opportunity to alleviate some of her grief when he learns of a fourth brother, Private James Ryan, and decides to send out 8 men (Cpt. Miller and select members from 2nd Rangers) to find him and bring him back home to his mother...

I know it is fashionable to trash hit movies, but at least be honest about the trashing
... Pvt. Ryan is fiction but is quite good
historical fiction. The details are well thought out and based on reality.
There was nothing stupid about the image of the German army ... Rommel
DID error in its placement of force, the high command is believed DID
Calais will be the invasion of land, not Normandy. Hitler did not wake up until
noon that day and his aides were afraid to wake him up. The Rangers
has come to the right behind the first wave and not have a beach output
great desire to get the hell off the beach. The Bluffs were the scene of heavy fighting near
. The German defenders were mostly from Eastern Europe conscripts
defeated. (note that the 2 men who tried to surrender
not speak German). There was a young man rescued from inside
Normandy after his brothers were all killed. He was a soldier airborne (the difference was
which was found by a chaplain and was withdrawn from the front.)
Battles in Normandy were small shares from town to town, Street
street, house by house. Small actions like taking the radar station
happened. Small actions as a handful of men defending a bridge over the river
happened against the odds. Small squads of men, formed out of misdrops
joined ad hoc to fight. It enlisted all groups and all
official groups. A General did not die in glider assault. FUB
aptly describes much of what happened that day.
And there were only Americans in the film because the British and Canadians were many
Klicks away in a different area ... it was Omaha Beach. The story
was an American. And Monty DID peatlands in progress and everyone knows it
. And as for "stereotypes americas" ... and the almost define
americas: roomier my college was a wise-ass New York Jew. My best friend is a second generation
east coast of Sicily. My college girlfriend was a third generation German
. My first wife was French and English. I'm Irish, my boss
is Norwegian and I work with a navajo ... you get the point?
So much for that is bad history. In fact, it was a great way to let a
jaded and a little ignorant of their past generation * *
feel something of what their grandparents (grandparents life) went through.
It is perhaps less important than the exact details as it feels to be right. Even now
data are not fully known or know about this campaign ...
was too big, too complex and chaotic that one can know. There is not even an accurate count
casualty of D-Day.
Now on the depth of the characters. What I saw there was
the extraordinary circumstances under which ordinary people and took to what happened
them. I have seen things that would mark a generation (I heard in my male patients aged
similar sentiments to what Cpt.
Miller was expressing when he announced his regular) saw the dehumanization that produces
with war and its mitigation moment to moment, man to man ... Cpt. Miller
knew nothing about Ryan and he did not care ... Ryan until he revealed his humanity
him with his account of his brothers. Pvt. Reiber
was ready to leave the situation until its regular discoverd
masters and their humanity. Then he began to view him almost like a father. Pvt. Mellish
rightly delights in revenge for her every time he has had to consider
German Jew because he was telling the captives is "Juden!" Nerdish Cpl.
Upham can stand next to its largest, strongest, most courageous fellow Ranger
and describe the melancholy and poetry of Edith Piaf song of the ... then his face
cowardice, turn around and walk on the face of danger and, finally,
demonstrate the dehumanization of the company was enmeshed in a
Steamboat Willie execution ... Willie, but had no choice about being there
made Upham and in other circumstances would have made a
friend.
could go on and on with this, but enough already. OK, maybe not the
Best Movie Ever Made, but it is still a good movie. And if one is going to take the top-side chafers
fashion outside negativism that will see it. Lastly, this is
is not a patriotic history ... in any case it is a recognition and thank you to all
older men still out there who did so much for us. To them I say
a deep and sincere thanks.
I've never been affected by how a movie Saving Private Ryan
affected me. This film really brought me out of my seat in the cinema and theatre
almost had me believing I was actually in the battle with John Miller.
When someone was dying in that movie, he felt as if I could almost feel your pain
. Speilberg did an incredible job of putting realism in this
film with the camera work and everything else. Simply amazing. A
great time.
