Wow… no, I mean that. American Beauty is a film that takes my breath away
every time I watch, and every time I watch it, I realize something
latest, something more exciting and more fun. There is honesty
no other film like this, and if you have not seen anything
Dong in his head, and must do so now.
Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is in a mid-life crisis, caused by his wife Carolyn stressed
(Annette Bening) and rebel teen
Jane (Thora Birch). When Lester and Carolyn go see Jane Cheerleading,
know
Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari), and Lester, caught in a sudden lust for Angela,
decides to change his life. Angela and Jane's friendship is not all that
seems, also, because only Angela brags how many times she has done
with kids and other things. That does not help much uncertainty and Jane
but she finds solace in the arms of next-door neighbors' son,
Ricky Fitts (Wes Bentley). Ricky, himself from a broken home too, and Jane
find they have much in common and eventually become
soulmates.
Everything about this film is so dark clear, it is very obvious why
the Academy loved it, and it is very obvious to see that I love. Spacey
savagely Lester brings to life in a spectacle reminiscent of the Spacey
acting coach Jack Lemmon. Also at the top is formed Annette Bening, in a more controlled
performance that is so adorable instantly. While all the attention was
these artists, is also Thora Birch (mainly), Mena Suvari, Wes Bentley and a quiet
Allison Janney who manage to steal the show just as much
. Sam Mendes is an excellent manager, this is his first feature, and
he is a man British American directing a film based on! And he won an Oscar for
it! That is an impressive achievement, ditto to Alan Ball, which is the script
indeed a stunned and a winner.
The best film of 1999, the best movie of its decade and for the moment, anyway,
American Beauty is high as the best film ever made.
"American Beauty" is a tour de force film. Sam Mendes' brilliant debut feature
presents a network of characters who yearn for their own 'americas
Dream "- but in the end only be truly achieved.
Having seen "happiness" only recently, I could help, but not
draw comparisons: the two films focusing on a microcosm of society in which people
, In their own unique way, all strive to succeed or simply
'happy'. But here the similarities end: the characters in "Happiness"
undergo a self-realization process by which we become increasingly aware of their existence
senseless, and go to Wallowa in their own
Depravity. "Happiness" shows no sign of redemption, whereas in "American Beauty
" gives the audience a sense of hope and salvation, although
characters should suffer a similar fate, or more exactly, should bear
lifestyle in which they are trapped.
The fundamental nature on which the centres of this item, is the father Lester,
impeccably played by Kevin Spacey. The presents us with a bit of a loser
played by the subjugated
figure at home and at work. The seems resigned to an unhappy life in
who was treated badly by his wife and daughter and his boss at work. Apparently
beyond redemption, Lester transforms from being a loser.
Mendes portrays this transformation admirably well: he shows in his Lester
'path to enlightenment' pushed against a sombre backdrop of Suburbanites
existence. These early scenes are well balanced, forming a steady pace of
TV commercial-like vignettes to be very funny, although sometimes disturbing
. As Lester reflected in the film: "My life is like a business."
And how true this sounds: as in "Happiness", all the characters
hiding beneath that veneer of normalcy and respectability, and yet they are all
revealed to be nothing more than opposite: depression, depraved and desperate.
Lester's wife, played by Annette Benning, is more driven by the success
character in the story that makes most of its hope in the film
tone of moral conviction . "To succeed in life one must
the emergence of successful projects" is the motto of adopting the 'king'
of real estate, Buddy King. It is a phrase that resonates throughout the film
: for Benning's pawn, life has to do with keeping up appearances. This is
Lester, where it differs: emancipation is enabled by discarding him
the limitations of "normal life" and after what your heart desires.
Lester is the catalyst of this narrative in which the characters either side
follow suit (as did her daughter and Ricky) or pay the price (as his wife
and Colonel). The irony inherent in this movie, and it grows with
resonance as the film reaches its conclusion, is that the only
character becomes truly free must sacrifice everything in order to achieve
. However, is through their sacrifice that is able to afford the
characters who survive a vision of hope in life.
This film left me gasping for air: its hyper-realism conveys,
at the same time, a portrait of suburban comedy, a clash of putting a ceiling of achievement, and
cathartic sense of hope. Mendes shows some people who, to varying degrees
, all fighting for a certain American Dream, yet so few actually achieve it
. While at the same time one may have trouble with this movie
marked with the 'feel good' label, the beauty of "American Beauty" is
that sits halfway between a desperate cry for help and a reassuring sense of
happiness and achievement and that is cinema at its best.
