Following the death of his employer and mentor, Bumpy Johnson, Frank Lucas establishes himself as the number one importer of heroin in the Harlem district of Manhattan. He does so by buying heroin directly from the source in South East Asia and he comes up with a unique way of importing the drugs into the United States. As a result, his product is superior to what is currently available on the street and his prices are lower. His alliance with the New York Mafia ensures his position. It is also the story of a dedicated and honest policeman, Richie Roberts, who heads up a joint narcotics task force with the Federal government. Based on a true story.

American Gangster on the surface seems to be what has been called
by some critics as "the black Scarface." As the new Ridley Scott film
details, this is not really well aside from the point '
stood up from nothing became something through crime', which
could be said about almost every gangster film including The Godfather. Here
Scott and screenwriter Steve Zaillian, without calling attention to what
wing Paul Haggis, have made a film about issues of class below the typical
gangster-movie. Even more than the dead, as one sees the film will
in an environment of paradox: Frank Lucas was a little life,
murderer, a merciless bandit, and at the same time, he found time to take his < br> mother to church every Sunday and gave turkeys to people in
neighborhood while providing enough to Dope
die in the process.
In fact, Scarface has nothing to Frank Lucas when it comes to moral complexity
: here the man who made lifted out of poverty, gained
at stake the lives of Gangs as a driver for the Harlem head of fifteen years,
and then died after cutting the middle-man as an importer of
the freshest products right of heroin from Vietnam. Then, through this
there is a whole other level americas Gangster;
Zaillian and Scott could have done just a saga of betrayal and research across
Richie Roberts. But the side that one sees in Serpico is amplified here -
that becomes all the more engrossing to see how the cops and crooked
"honest" gangster Lucas were linked, which also leads to a
stop that amps up the interest. Luke does not leave as Henry Hill,
but a good man all the same? Probably not (which ended in jail again,
as the film does not point out).
hence, there is plenty of history to explore, Scott and makes it one of the most invigorating
, nostalgic (ironically speaking) from New York crime films
in years, Regarding the storytelling goes. And, like heat, Scott receives a
much mileage from his star power. Washington goes even deeper into
the role of villain than he did in Training Day-which plays like him
classic family man, cold businessman, and charming man in the
community. He makes both his role
can not imagine anyone else going down a street in Harlem shot a boy
point blank in the head. And Crowe also adds some good subtlety to the part, imperfect
a man with his family and someone who tries to maintain their morale
straight (one million dollars transferred to the station) in the midst of total
bully Josh Brolin as thieves "special" detective. At the moment the two stars
finally sit down to a scene, is on a par with De Niro and Pacino
.
Why not a 10/10 or 4 stars? It is, quite rightly, realized despite
narrative, with some unnecessary bits (Cuba Gooding Jr.,
what happened?) Over a period of two hours and forty minutes image. But Scott did not fazer American Gangster gain momentum, as it goes along
power and reaches a climax that is the first intense and bloody (after Scott
total), followed by a surprising point human. And there is nothing in
Scarface, in the end all, as far as rightful dramatic
without ham, as the actors and director click for more information on the material only needs
be told without pretension and with -
that the dose of real significance of urban crime in 1970 in New York City.
Starting, this probably should not be grouped in as a mob movie. For
one, Crowe is the character of both the initiative as Denzel, this is a
police capture criminals film. But also, there is little mafia, is
Frank Lucas at the top and everyone else trying to attach to it, is a
man and that is very clear.
American Gangster works on many levels. It is in part a portrait of late
60 and the early 70's and Harlem americas, full of drugs and desperation and weakness
, where the sharp rise above the rest and policemen are
dirtier than rats. As a crime thriller is entertaining and a
2 hours 37 minutes, never loses interest. But perhaps more surprising,
is also a magnificent and dramatic character study. Literally every character
that steps on the screen is convincing, is the depth of them, has its
motivations, and is thrown into conflict. For example there is a scene early
Crowe where the character of Richie and his partner were looking for a
parked car and found a large amount of money unmarked in the trunk.
Without giving further, and the following scenes give rise to some surprising
moral character and the statements by Scott. Richie's moral
vs. all the other temptations of the streets
sat on him throughout the film, and thanks to the great Crowe great performance,
adds much to the film.
Denzel is bright here. Frank Lucas, with its collection still burning,
always powerfully menacing performance is one of the best king heads
It occurs to me in recent history. When not speaking, as the
his face is set, you get this totally totally character. The Academy
would easily give him the right to make a nomination this year.
Also wanted to add that while the two drivers do not get on the screen until the last 20
minutes, which have extended a long scene that is pure dynamite and
gold. They play each other perfectly and is well worth
accumulation and, perhaps, are among the most prominent of each performance.
Going by supporting actors, Josh Brolin gives one of the year
most surprising performances as an insufferable
dirty and despicable cop. He is very viscous, money-grubbing and, however, intelligent and an equal footing,
he is the only cunning. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is decent one in its place, but is hampered by
be most unnecessary. Chiwetal Ejifor makes a credible character
side despite the fact that it is not given as much to do, and
lastly, I think that Ruby Dee could be a sleeper Best Supporting Actress contender for her role
Breast Lucas. All other short and thankless role
I have not mentioned here is superbly acted too, is a sign of a great director
to all who are in their game.
Ridley Scott direction, great, what can you say.
Creates New York and rats living in it to the point with great attention to detail
, and most of the scenes in the film is built shot
simply perfect. This includes the brief but brutally effective
opening scene, which stands as one of the most memorable openings
I've seen in a while. In reality any time there is gunplay or action, even if there is not much
that in general, is impressive. Particularly at the end
there is a police raid scene that presents itself as the "holyyyy crap"
sequence of the film. Go for a corridor to the preparation of a heroin apartment, and
without revealing anything else, is unbelievable, just unbelievable.
Remember that when people are passing nuts on the track
trick shots in Children of Men? I felt that way about it. If there is a god,
Ridley finally regain the leadership of his Oscar this year, deserves
For this reason and its extensive career.
American Gangster is probably one of the best cop movies based on
I've seen, and up there with mafia. Not one of the best jobs
reviewing the rise and fall of a drug crime or head of the right
dives right in principle and on the other side what it means to be a
CP and fight for something, and just said to a huge and magnificently directed
gangster story.
One of the very thin films of the year.
