In a style reminiscent of the best of David Lean, this romantic love story
sweeps across the screen with equal epic proportions for the vast desert regions
against the establishment. It is a film that seeks
one does not choose love, but it is love that makes the choice,
regardless of who, where or when, and moreover, it is a matter of the heart
often depends on the conditions and circumstances. And
as is the situation in `The English Patient ', directed by Anthony Minghella
, the story of two people who discover the passion and true love in
most inopportune of times and places , Proving that when it is predestined,
love will find a way.

World War II, flying over the African desert, the Hungarian Count Laszlo de Almasy
(Ralph Fiennes) is demolished, his biplane confused with a hostile aircraft.
And if he survives the accident, he is very burned. To his great good fortune
, however, is rescued by a tribe of nomads and winds
in a hospital. However, conditions are governed by the circumstances of war, and
Almasy soon becomes one of many patients being transported by a convoy
different facilities. Upon arrival in Italy, he is too weak and ill to continue
, and a Canadian nurse, Hana (Juliette Binoche), volunteers to stay behind
with him in an abandoned monastery.

Hana soon discovers that his office is something of a mystery man, as
Almasy remembers nothing of his past, and even his own name. Thought to be
English, the only clues pointing to him are contained in a book
found in his possession after the accident, but even they are as cryptic as
Hana patient. Gradually, however, under the request of Hana, Almasy
begins to recall bits and pieces of her life and her story begins to unfold.
And his memory is helped along further by the appearance of a mysterious stranger named
Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe), which is the suspicion that Almasy
man has been seeking - a man with whom wants to settle a score. But
, burned beyond recognition, Almasy may or may not be that man.
Meanwhile, Almasy memory continue to surface; memories of a woman who loved
, Katherine Clifton (Kristin Scott Thomas) - and memories of
Katherine's husband, Geoffrey (Colin Firth). And, paralyzed in mind and body
as he is, memories become the only thing left to enable him to cling
with any hope at all, even when her life seems to be slipping farther
With each passing moment.

addition to directing, Anthony Minghella also wrote the screenplay for this film
, that adapting the novel by Michael Ondaatje.
The result is an epic saga in the tradition of introducing Lean `Doctor Zhivago 'and`
Lawrence of Arabia', a magnificent film that fills the screen and the senses without
precedents with grandeur and beauty. In a nutshell, the film is really Minghella
genius; developed and delivered with a poetic perfection, is like watching
see a Monet come to life. From the opening frames,
Minghella casts a hypnotic spell over its audience is binding and
transport, with a story that has an emotional beauty that is equal to the
engagingly impressive and vibrant images brought to life of John Seale's cinematography
remarkable; images that almost fill the screen, as well as
the soul of the viewer. In all senses, this is a film of a rare eloquence,
with a surprising emotional capacity that provides an experience that is truly momentous
. Nominated in twelve categories,
deservedly received a total of nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Director,
Supporting Actress (Binoche) and Cinematography.

If one were to choose one word to describe the `essence 'of this film, would
` excellence'. Even an extraordinary film, however, not
receives nine Oscars, without performances that are extraordinary in kind, and
given performances by Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas here
transcend the concept of "Oscar worthy '. Nominated for Best Actor for his
image of Almasy (Geoffrey Rush was awarded the gold for `Shine '),
Fiennes has never been better, achieve emotional depth with his character who is
almost palpable. Private and introspective, Almasy is not
by their very nature, a person to whom the public will be able to form an intimate relationship
; Fiennes, however, found a way to open up emotionally that the only door
enough to leave you, long enough for him taste the honest passion
Welling up inside him. And it works. Almasy does not seek their friendship;
him, however, earn his compassion.

Kristen Scott Thomas, also received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress
(Frances McDormand received the award for "Fargo") for his portrait of
Katherine, a woman whose consent the stoicism masks
emotional conflicts raging within it, was born of forbidden passion that enslaves, yet its
to which she gives herself voluntarily, outside their foundry shackles of repression
embrace a love so strong that threatens to consume it. The Reserve
Katherine must maintain evokes empathy from the audience, as Scott Thomas
successfully mines the emotional depth of his character as much as possible
effect. It's the sort of performance that you call and keeps you
fast, taking as you do beyond that curtain of hypocrisy that
dictates what should be if only for the sake of appearances, and
allows you to experience a real sense of unbridled passion. And underestimate the shadow
subtlety, is magnificent work of Kristin Scott Thomas.

Binoche gives an impressive, affecting performance and, in his capacity as kindhearted
nurse, Hana, but it is his humanity, in fact, that defines love in its most
pure sense and offers a balanced perspective of it within the context of
film. His relationship with Kip (Naveen Andrews) gives us a vision of
other passion, which contrasts effectively with the intensity that
between Almasy and Katherine. "The English Patient 'is a film that
him move and you fill emotionally, one that does not want to see.
