George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube star in "Three Kings," the story of a small group of adventurous American soldiers in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War who are determined to steal a huge cache of gold reputed to be hidden somewhere near their desert base. In 1994, then 1996, David O. Russell established himself as one of the few
original voices in American comedy with his films and spanking the monkey
flirting with disaster, respectively. There could be followed in that vein,
but seemed to be going mainstream with a study of cinema,
starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and what appears to be a
action / adventure set in the Gulf War, at least if only
trailer (which let me go "Huh?"). After seeing the film, Russell
is clear to me that there is now one of the biggest talents to emerge from 90 years as
this is a masterpiece.
As I mentioned earlier, the trailer was confusing, but while the film is clear
, Russell (who re-wrote a screenplay by John Ridley, although there are a lot of
over containment which did exactly what) makes it clear from the outset his intention to launch
curves us whenever he can, from Wahlberg
asking as he calls his sights on an Iraqi soldier, " ; Are we still shooting people
? "The soldier fired at anyway, and is immediately
remorse when he sees the soldier was holding a white flag. The film goes from there to
soldiers, although in a festive atmosphere, are still somewhat puzzled as to why
you're there, a journalist (played by the underused but Nora Dunn) who can not
stop talking in cliches, a tanker that, when fired, becomes
holding milk, and Iraqi refugees that Americans thought iban a
release of Saddam Hussein and are now suffering from she. It is this attitude makes
than normal-sounding plot - Clooney,
Wahlberg, Ice Cube, Spike Jonze and play the soldiers was just
thieves with a conscience - as play anything but normal-sounding .
Another thing that helps is the picture (I forget the name of the boy, but he also made
the usual suspects). Far from clear that the future we photograph
in transmissions, this is full of potholes, dangerous and, like the plot,
constantly puts us in front of the guard.
Finally, the performances. I think Clooney has long been underappreciated
not, as most people assume, because he is a sex symbol, but rather because, like
Harrison Ford and others of its kind, making is very easy.
There is nothing easy about his character, and Clooney does not have the easiest path
here. Failure at the expense of his charm and try to make the character sympathetic, but
passing through the journey of her character does, and even without a lot of dialogue
(at the end, his face when the signals to Wahlberg and Ice Cube said
everything you need to know, like your Nods later). Wahlberg is fast becoming
one of our best players, and this proves it. Even comedian considers potential
when you do not expect any. Ice Cube has had a mixed career since Boyz
IN THE HOOD, but this ranks up with that performance. Finally,
Jonze has been criticized for playing a hillbilly stereotype, but the key is how the
more like a lapdog hunger for affection instead of just white trash, and he plays
as such. This is the best movie I've seen so far this
year.
I spend most of my time bitching what sense and most cliché
released by Hollywood films are, so it's always a pleasant surprise when a
'Pulp Fiction' or a 'Boogie Nights' or' American Beauty 'is released
and makes me eat my words. 'Three Kings' deserves to be mentioned in
while very thin films, but what on the left of this field was a surprise
! As much as I enjoyed David O. Russell 's previous films "Hitting
The Monkey" and "flirting with disaster," I never would have expected him
be able to make a film as fresh and original as this!
Easily overlooked, is very skillfully manages to work simultaneously as a
action / adventure and a comedy, and a wonderful lesson in subversive
recent political history. Who would have thought? The other surprise is just how the fine is
Motley cast. TV heart throb Clooney, rappers turned actors
Wahlberg and Ice Cube, video and director Jonze. All of them are much better than
nobody would have the right to expect, and are supported by
some strong performances by the likes of Cliff Curtis ( 'Once Warriors'), Nora < br> Dunn ( 'The Last Supper'), Jamie Kennedy ( 'Scream') and, above all,
Said Taghmaoui ( 'La Haine'), the latter in a role that should have made him an international star
. 'Three Kings' is in my opinion, a modern classic
and one of the best films of the past ten years. I can not recommend it highly enough
!
