During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, with greater fire power, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Russell Crowe brings great intensity to the role of Captain Jack Aubrey. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. While the naval battle sequences are quite fantastic, the film is successful because director Weir chose to build the story to get to know the men who are locked aboard the tight quarters of a small ship and how they interact everyday. The officers and the mates are well-known by the time the final battle comes. Paul Bettany offers a strong performance as the surgeon and naturalist who balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain's friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together. The horrors of the injuries from the war are frequently implied, but vividly depicted in the reactions of the characters.

I must begin by saying that I have read one or two
Patrick O'Brien novels. Especially on airplanes, and they were great! This movie blows away any
Expectation that there was for an interpretation of his novels. The surprising
Attention to detail and great acting were on a par with, if not a large excess
Donaldson of "The Bounty" when Mel Gibson and Tony Hopkins
realized disrupt performances . In this film, however, we are not
lost in the great work period (which is outside the amazing graphics),
also noted in the characters. Developed with real life failures
And strong, even couragous our leader, Jack Aubrey, drink a little too much
, it is hard with his crew and (maybe) a couple of desicions that may not
have been in the best possible way at the time. What we have is a real
Life and incredibly insightful look at an exciting and very important
time in the history of the world.
Written as a battle between the British "Surprise" a relatively modest
ship and the American "Aceron" to switch to an audience of French naval
America. I am sure that after 911 most Americans prefer to see
Aubrey crush the life of a great and powerful French frigate, which
An American. In any case, the battle scenes are incredible,
attention to detail, impeccable, and the act .... Excellent. Never
Russell Crowe liked, but every movie I have seen it I think I
saying, "that man is an amazing actor." In my humble opinion,
This is his greatest achievement. Supporting actors, until
inexperienced young players, the son of game that truly midshipman
were part of the American and British navies of several hundred
years.
