Does Robert Towne L.A. 'S Woody Allen? His portraits of the city are
indelible, and one of the main pleasures of Ask the Dust is how
that depression was the city of Los Angeles becomes a character in the film
. Ask the Dust is tormented by the idea that LA is the place
where people come to die slowly in the sun and is a fascinating piece of
"sunny" black cinema. It also explores themes of racism,
prejudices and self-esteem and how they manifest themselves in personal relationships
. There is a boldness to the ugliness that makes the romance
first third of the film especially convincing. The scene where
Arturo Bandini and Camilla Lopez meet for the first time is pure cinema and one of the most remarkable bit of
mainstream film I've seen in some time. In
form, is as sublime as Brassai's pictures cafe-society Paris. In
the print job I watched, Ask the Dust was not able to maintain this intensity
opening, but was achieved, however, compelled to stay.
Perhaps the best compliment I can pay Ask the Dust is reminiscent
why I Chinatown is a great film (and comparisons were inevitable
), whereas I do not think Ask the Dust is in same league,
announce welcome back Robert Towne as an artist
THE understood by instinct, he knows how to exploit the rich Hollywood
history, and can offer a human-scale film with the power to reward
and possibly even change its audience.
This is a film that proves that humor and music and texture
are not enough to make a good movie. Of course, the viewer is treated to fine
numerous scenes of Los Angeles in the thirties - I especially liked the view of
car approaching the tunnel, tram and increased
up the slope - but a sense, this is fine cinematography
counterproductive, because it creates a feeling that "something will happen
" - and nothing does. The script also has some feinting toward
plot or trauma or action - and again and again not delivering. Even
delivery of the (I suppose) the theme of the film, the characters essential
misfit. The main actors, both too good for their roles,
not convey any repression or agony, and the screenplay does not expose us to everything.
Now, Donald Sutherland? That's another story. His character was so well
fashion, so it plays well, he wanted the camera to follow him.
