I do not use the word "masterpiece" often when reviewing a movie, but
for "Whale Rider" is an inadequate Accolade. This is one of the most
moving
beautiful and powerful films I've seen in years.

Screenplay writer and director Niki Caro faithfully translated Witi
Ihimaera's novel of the same name, a touching and sad, but sometimes
ultimately uplifting story of Maori of New Zealand seeking, with the
direction of a difficult, stubborn and often hard to maintain his elder
of peoples values and customs.

Australia and New Zealand are both finding, in politics and culture

(and, often, the two are inextricably linked), their common heritage of

white oppression of native peoples. Much of this history is unknown
for Americans and Europeans who see Australia through a bird's eye the image

Sydney Opera House in New Zealand and even less associative
icons.

recently, "Rabbitproof Fence" policy represents painfully Australia

force for lighter skin in Aboriginal "schools" where feeds
to become
"semi-white", then married to those of similar skin tone. The
was the subject of bleach to the blackness of Australia and the horrors

this incarnation of cultural anthropology and genocide are in full screen

in that movie.

"Whale Rider" has a different and, ultimately, perhaps a more powerful version
approach. Virtually no whites in the film just for kids
and t-shirts and music blasting from a Boombox suggests the invading force
control of the majority.

The cast is unknown to Americans and their names can be found at IMDb
homepage of the film. The lead actress, however, it should be. In

role of "Pai", a young woman whose mother dies at birth along with his twin brother
, is the extraordinary Keisha Castle-Hughes. She infuses every scene with a commander
inviting and vitality. Theirs is an Academy Award (and any other
grand prize).

Pai's father left New Zealand for Europe, to create and sell handicrafts
Maori. He lives with his grandmother and grandfather, the latter
some kind of unelected
chieftain of the community of Oceanside. Bitter that no male heir

he will succeed and alternately cruel and loving their reluctance to
acknowledged granddaughter, Koro begins a school to supplement the young men
secular education with inculcating Forms of Maori. Pai
wishes to join on an equal footing and firmly, in fact harshly rejected all
turn.

If the Maori language is the phrase "You go, girl!"
then headed towards the indefatigable but not arrogant Pai. It would have been easy
make his kind of irreflexivas rebels who often programs nature

be teenagers. The depth of his character lies in its quest for simultaneous
equality and understanding of his grandfather for his unwavering attachment

patriarchal values. Pai's close relationship with his grandmother, a woman living a life
universally recognizable by the Americans, provides heat and
support and do some of their other relationships.

The story takes place smoothly with the Maori music and rituals of transition
spoken dialogue (mostly in English, some in Maori
with subtitles). Partly

straight story, in part, a mystical grip fable, "Whale Rider"
never becomes saccharine.

The Maori music and the songs complement but not compete with dialogue,

a welcome change from many movies today. The land and ocean are rawly
magnificent.

As in Australia, today the relations between New Zealand and indigenous peoples

the descendants of their vanquishers are sometimes strained. There are open wounds
political collision over land and culture. The
Maori are not a monolith and internal dissent is active. Graves
attempts to maintain Maori values and culture in the face of assimilation pressures
meet with varied degrees of success (in koro of Maori school children use
shirts with themes of rock and one has a T-shirt advertising
New York resort area if I saw correctly). More
New Zealand Maori is internationally renowned opera diva Kiri Te Kanawa is now
dedicated to Maori culture restoration projects. "Whale Rider"
can only give impetus to those efforts, as evidenced by this movie, which not only makes
New Zealand, but the world richer.

This is a movie I will buy on DVD as soon as it becomes available.

10/10.
This film, which opened in New York recently, was a total surprise.
Director Niki Caro has done wonders with what in this story to the screen as shown
another world and much simpler than the rat race of our society and
horrible times < br>
The film presents a vision of society Maori in New Zealand North Island
. After having visited New Zealand, but are not very familiar with the
The Maori culture, this movie is a refreshing way to learn some aspects of
.

The history presented here has much to do with the pride and tradition, which is an issue
operating between different cultural groups around the world. It has to do with the frustration of
koro by the defection of his eldest son,
designated heir of a hundred years of blood that only men can lead
knowledge and legends from generation to generation < br> next.

cause of rabies Porourangi, the eldest son, feels after the death of his wife
giving birth to twins, where only the female survived, leaving his country
and the girl is adopted by grandparents. The girl, Pai,
grow to be a lovely girl who will be excluded from the teachings of his grandfather Koro
. Although she loves the girl can not deviate in their
close view of the world he knows.

Basically, this is a very simple story told with a great performance
child actress Keisha Castle-Hughes. This girl has a strong magnetism
, while in the camera that one tends to forget all the other characters
each time it occurs. Grandparents are very well portrayed by Rawiri
PARATENIC and Vicky Houghton.

This is a film for all ages to enjoy. To compare it with the latest releases
Hollywood, not surprisingly concluded that the stories
as Whale Rider has a universal appeal that must be brought to the screen
more often because to the positive showing
a society and its people under the best conditions.
