Based on the true story of Henri Charriere, also known as Papillon, which is French for 'butterfly' (the character even sports a large tattoo of a butterfly. A petty criminal, Papillon is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a French penal colony in 'Guiane' (French Guiana, South America). Papillon is determined to escape but attempt after attempt meets with difficulty, resulting in eventual recapture. He continues his attempts to escape despite incarcerations in solitary confinement as punishment.

"Papillon" (pronounced "pap-e-yawn") is one of the most undervalued
films of the 1970's. Most critics attacked it in his release, accusing
be extremely overlong. That's unfortunate, because that is
is the only major fault. Despite the silly instead casting
Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman as criminals French, who surprisingly
work well together. Franklin J. Schaffner 's address is inspiring, as is
most of the work he did while at the top of his game.
Creates one of my favorite shots in movie history (the short blow dart sequence), and
captures the isolation of McQueen perfectly.
As for length, the sequence of people
runs too long (though the nudity certainly entertain some), and cutting some scenes
earlier may have helped. Even so, "Papillon" remains one of the most exhausting
and well done prison dramas of all time.

I enjoyed watching this film several times during the three decades
since it was released.
Yes, of course, is a horrible and tragic story of how humanity can be
brutal, but more importantly, is an inspiring story of resistance
and the triumph of human spirit in the face of immense adversity
. I often think of the closing scene where Papillon
floats outside the prison island in its raft of coconuts. This was really my favorite
all of Steve McQueen films. Dustin Hoffman's performance
predicted the depth and richness of its ability to act.
I recommend this movie. This is a timeless classic.
