A village in Canada has an old legend about a phantom that years ago killed three villagers. Many residents are afraid that the monster has come back, because some of them have seen strange luminous shapes, and then some sheep were found with their throats slashed. Their worst fears seem to be confirmed when Lady Penrose is found killed in the same way. Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are in Quebec, attending a meeting of the Royal Canadian Occult Society, where they are involved in a sharp debate with Lord Penrose about his village's legend. Not long after Lord Penrose receives word of his wife's death, Holmes receives a letter that the dead woman had written before she died, begging for his help and protection. When Holmes goes to the village to investigate, he finds himself hunting a determined murderer who is also a master of disguise.

The configuration of this adventure of Sherlock Holmes is Canada, and has a
beautiful tribute to my neighbors in the north at the end of the film with a quote from Winston Churchill
.
I was glad to see a movie debunk all this nonsense that hides the film
world is generally covered, or at least are fascinated by. The characters are interesting
and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) is his usual mumbling and bumbling
free entertaining. There are a couple of good scenes of suspense,
too.
This is one of the best thrillers and SH expected in the super
restored DVD. It's hard not to enjoy all
Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films. They are real treasures.
This sixth inning in the Universal Sherlock Holmes series was the third
that challenged the initial conception of the franchise. Universal has
Sherlock Holmes is projected as a kind of archetypal hero who,
transported in the modern era of World War II, could be placed on the government payroll
, so to speak, to work as agent of a contract to prosecute Nazi spies
on behalf of the Allies. Perhaps somewhat unexpectedly, this idea
met with a high degree of consternation, not only for serious
Sherlockians, but also of film critics whose knowledge of Doyle's work was marginal in
best.
of course, most of the Holmes films made so far had been
updated their respective eras (in fact, only two Fox Holmes
characteristics with Rathbone and Bruce has taken place
in its proper time period), but in such cases, was the modernization in all
surface. Automobiles, telephones, and fashion of the day were all
screen ... but that was, for all intents and purposes, scenery. The
stories, although it has changed (sometimes dramatically)
their original forms, had a show quality about them. The first three
Universal films, however, were very timely, with plots focused explicitly on the
events of World War II. This was Holmes outside their
... element not only in the literal sense of eliminating him
Victorian / Edwardian London (as previous films had done), but
transform the character of Holmes an inquiry into a detective
Spy-Hunter. In fact, sometimes there are more James Bond
that Sherlock Holmes to this character. This trend reached its maximum (or bottom) with
Sherlock Holmes in Washington ... The final straw
critics and the public alike. The film is a critical and box office flop and
Universal has seen fit to alter the series' direction since then.
Although still taking place in the 1940's, later made his films
best place to Holmes in his proper role, solving mysteries with intricate
deductive reasoning ... more than pure chance and
intuition that what often guided in their forays into international espionage
. This may (or not) be accredited to the director
Roy William Neill (who directs all, but the first entry in the series),
, with the fourth film, Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, became
the associate producer ... a title that would retain along the series' run
. Since then, films became more Gothic tone,
in many ways closer to the Universal horror films of the era that
the first three Universal Holmes images. This decision
produced immediate positive results. Sherlock Holmes Faces Death was easily the best
of the first four innings, and topped with one another
subsequent films until at rush hour with The Scarlet Claw.
Curiously, the film is set in a French province of Canada not to ...
discernible reason. The scenario is completely superfluous to the plot,
that could easily have played out anywhere (ideally Great Britain).
This is all the more surprising by the fact that the predominant
accent in the film is British, rather than French
Canada ... even americas agents threw a Brit accent, despite
americas accents that would have been wiser in Canada. But no matter
. This slight idiosyncrasies aside, The Scarlet Claw is the last
Rathbone / Universal Bruce departure. Do not adapted from any of the
Doyle original "Robinson Crusoe" (although largely debtor The Hound of the Baskerville
), The Scarlet Claw is dripping with atmosphere. Fog-
wreath marshes are the establishment as Holmes tracks a ghostly appearance
that has graduated from the mutilation of sheep to assassinate
humans. The villagers believe the culprit to be supernatural, but
level-headed Holmes rejected the idea out of hand, and is set to
the task of finding the murderer.
Rathbone, Holmes, is at the top of his form here and cold ...
separate clinic in his reasoning. And Bruce Watson's, even in this
dumb down incarnation, is a pleasure to watch. Crisp direction,
beautiful cinematography (especially for a film-B),
a lot of twists and turns along the way, and no small amount of deductive reasoning
Holmes, making it the most strong entry in the Universal series. The
later films were often good, but none ever falls conducting
The Scarlet Claw ... that is both Gothic, suspenseful, and
very, very Holmesian. It makes no sense without its flaws, but
defects are justified by the image of the enormous entertainment value. And
of all films in the series, this is by far the most entertaining
.
