Set on the future earth, Johnny rico is a young student dating a girl named Carmen. When Carmen decides to join the military in order to become a class citizen (citizenship is only achieved through serving your country), Johnny follows and joins as well. He soon realizes that he joined for the wrong reasons but just as he is about to quit, an asteroid that originated from the orbit of planet "klendathu" hits Buenos Aires (his home town) and kills his family. Johnny and his fellow troopers set out to destroy the planet's inhabitants: a type of deadly and very large scaled space bugs. Through a seemingly ordinary action flick, director paul verhoeven creates a subtle anti-war theme, that shows us a fascist and military world far more frightening than WW2's Germany, Italy or Russia, the kind of world that is actually functioning.

This film is about war and militaristic society and its effects on humans.
I agree with Leonard Maltin (the professional film critic)
that everything is directly inspired by World War II battles of World War II and movies.
The enemy is irrelevant, and characterize the enemy is not important.
That is why we never have any explanation, why the bugs are attacking us,
how their arms work, etc. The film is
extremely bloody to make the point that "war is hell", and war
consists of a large amount of "blood and guts." It is also making the point that our
tolerance of violence is a constant acceleration. In this future world,
is not much to get stabbed through any body part, is even a
part of military training. The pain is not of concern, simply to call
"Medic!" And get on the road.
The film does not try to be witty or funny. The viewer does not have to listen to
foreigners being called all sorts of combinations of cuss words
heroes.
The characters are realistic. Sometimes doing the right thing for the wrong reasons
and vice versa. At times they are not sure that is good and that
self-motivation.
I also liked the scene of the shower. Only the concept 19 years of age,
- physically fit, men and women casually and showering
bunking together is fascinating.

One of my favorite movies, this.
I like the way Verhoeven approached the idea of Man v Beast. Our "heroes" are
beautiful white teeth Americans, firm body and morale;
decapitating our villains are stick insects, cockroaches and giant worms.
however, who are the real heroes?
teeth white Americans are meaningless, shallow thugs. This is in essence
a war with Bugs, whose planets, we are told, have been invaded by the Americans
. Mistakes are justifiably upset.
I could not help laughing at some of the "Nazis"
parallels drawn by other reviewers. What Verhoeven is putting everything in this movie is not a polemic
against Nazi ideology, but an attack on U.S. imperialism
in the latter part of last century. It is satirising americas crusades against other
countries, whose inhabitants are portrayed in the American press as no better than
Bugs. Has
Verhoeven wants to attack the Nazis, he could have given the good guys
German accents; he does not, he gave them the accents of americas. The "Nazi"
symbolism commented upon by other reviewers Nazi symbolism is not at all
- totalitarian symbolism, period. It's extreme right, "
pump back to the Stone Age" americas totalitarianism.
Why believe this?
Take a look at the American scene, where children are encouraged to stamp
cockroaches overly excited by a parent. Take a look at the high
five years.
Verhoeven has carried out a powerful work here. He has made a film that has great
action, a great film, very beautiful women (and children), yet the film still succeeds
take the mickey of the New Order in a fun and very < br> effectively.
