I attended the screening of "Fierce People" in 2006
Woodstock Film Festival. I hesitate to label it a "premiere" of any kind, since it is
Shot in the spring of 2004 and had its world premiere at Tribeca
in 2005. He played several festivals this year. Liberation seemed imminent,
then disappeared. Poof. Desvanecido. Or so it seems to
Course cinema audience. Rumours of a play or have appeared on DVD
Now and then, but all proved unfounded. Then
this selection was announced. Perhaps one could call it a "re-premiere?" Certainly
felt as if I was witnessing a buried treasure. And what is a treasure.
Suppose we could characterize "Fierce People" as a coming of age
Drama. But it also has elements of comedy and tragedy, as well as
Mystery. And a bit of farce thrown in. In short, real life. That makes
Difficult box, which makes it more in the category of an indie
As opposed to a Hollywood movie. However, its high production values, great
budget feel, and the star caliber cast seem at odds with the indie label.
So let's call it a hybrid. And perhaps that is why it has been "lost".
Defy categorization.
Meet Finn Earl (Anton Yelchin), 15, whose father is absent. In fact,
Finn has never heard of him. But what he sees and hears him through the
collection of home movies shipped from South America. Dad is a renowned
Anthropologist, and has made a name for itself by creating the store
Yanomami, of the tribe of "Fierce People" who live to kill and thus
Procrear. All their activities are built around these two tasks, "and
Finn is captivated by him. Mom Liz (Diane Lane) is also a little absent.
Though physically present, it is lost in a world of cocaine and
Alcohol. So Finn becomes an adult in his small world with his solo
rolls of film.
One summer, her mother decided to drag along Finn in the wild world of
New Jersey. A massage therapist, has a client mom serves rich,
