In February, 1945, one of the fiercest battles of the Pacific theater of World War II occurs on the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Thousands of Marines attack the stronghold maintained by thousands of Japanese, and the slaughter on both sides is horrific. Early in the battle, an American flag is raised atop the high point, Mount Suribachi, and a photograph of the raising becomes an American cause celebre. As a powerful inspiration to war-sick Americans, the photo becomes a symbol of the Allied cause. The three surviving flag raisers, Rene Gagnon, John Bradley, and Ira Hayes, are whisked back to civilization to help raise funds for the war effort. But the accolades for heroism heaped upon the three men are at odds with their own personal realizations that thousands of real heroes lie dead on Iwo Jima, and that their own contributions to the fight are only symbolic and not deserving of the singling out they are experiencing. Each of the three must come to terms with the honors, exploitation, and grief that they face simply for being in a photograph.

I have always felt that when you fictionalize a story about war, you
Deshonrar the memory of so many people who have a history of

The problem with the war films on real people is that you have to deal
With the complexity of plot and character that gender simply not

So when the story at hand is intended to raise questions as "what
means doing things wrong for a good cause" and tries to debunk
The popular myth of herodom, there is very little margin for error.
Enter Clint Eastwood. Never one to shy away from difficult stories,
This is a far bigger than his usual understated character
Drama. On the one hand, it could "feel" like a movie Clint Eastwood,
But on the other hand, feels at home in their subjects used in place of heroes -
The person behind the personage more bigger than life. These are complex
Characters in very difficult situations, and presents them in a way
That is clear and unbiased, so we have to decide left
Responses to the film's central conflict ourselves.
To a person, the cast is up to the challenge. It's hard not to admire
Ryan Phillippe for a moderate and thoughtful performance, but
Go to the real kudos Adam Beach. Almost every aspect of the character Beach
cliché, with a small exception - it is true that the way Ira Hayes
. Therefore, the challenge was to present to Hayes as a real person, despite the
Cliché, and the result is one of the most harrowing and disturbing
performances in the film. Here is a guy who is presented as a hero who
really has no answer at all.
There is not much to like about the film. It is not "entertained" by
, in the same manner as any war memorial in DC is not entertaining.
Nor is a movie accessible. What is missing in
Popcorn-munching entertainment value, which replaces seriously.
This is an important film about an important moment. It's like a state
Valuable lesson of the story is secondary to that
reflections on human nature and our society. As such, it deserves to be seen, and
contemplates, and appreciated.
I can not wait to Letters From Iwo Jima (the companion piece, also
Clint Eastwood, told from the point of view Japanese.) Taken together,
The scope of this project is impressive.
A great movie that shows the war as it was, and is: ugly, frantic, business,
Confused, frustrating and very sad. The soldiers accompanying their friends
terrible situations with terrible consequences. Ryan Phillippe,
Adam Beach and Jesse Bradford are WONDERFUL. Paul Walker is not suck.
Neal McDonough and are great Barry Pepper (pepper, but it is still oldest
