Coming of age in Plainsboro, New Jersey. High school student Hal Hefner stutters. On the evening his parents stop arguing and separate, 43 miles away at the state tournament, his school's legendary debater, Ben Wekselbaum, goes blank mid-sentence, Ben's teammate Ginny Ryerson doesn't get a first-place trophy, and the world changes. That fall, to Hal's amazement, Ginny recruits him for the debate team, mentors him, and will be his partner. He still has his stutter, but he works hard and he falls in love with Ginny. On the day of the first debate of the season, the world changes again. From then until the day of the state tournament, Hal has a lot to sort out. Is love rocket science?

This has to be the best dialog box in any movie ever made with a stutterer as a central character.
I found the letter perfect performances, not a false note anywhere. This is a movie where even the bit parts are played well by casting agents, producers and not enough boyfriends or girlfriends. I loved the girl into the bathroom with a nosebleed, for example. Perfect.
Rushmore did not come to mind when I saw this movie, nor any of the other "extravagant" movies name here by other reviewers. But I did think of it as a companion piece "Welcome to the Dollhouse." Both established in NJ, and the two central characters at the bottom of their social rank school, and cope with their realities better than one might think.
I especially liked the relationship between adults and children in this film. The adults (parents and teachers) will know about children, and children are so wise about the adults. The tone was fair.
I am surprised that this film provokes so many negative comments here. I enjoyed reading the Rant for the guy who defines cello "Chello." I think more or less explains. Literacy is necessary to appreciate this movie.
With another entry in the "coming of age" category, I was pleasantly surprised to find - if not an original - a deeply felt, honest portrait of the trials of adolescence. The points were the strongest performances of the entire cast with Anna Kendrick, Vincent Piazza highlights. Of course, the good work of Reese Thompson will be rewarded by the praise it deserves (and hopefully granted).
But this deeply personal film has many good moments, both hysterically funny and painfully revealing. Because he refuses to be predictable - not even in the final moments - I believe it will be above other films of this genre. A score was chosen to keep it out of date. Never glib to a series dubbed "characters, and chooses to abandon the intelligent observations of the characters and not the film itself. Despite the theme of repressed anger and expressed their anger, there is a sweetness that avoids the sentimental.
Jeffery Blitz clearly needed to tell this story. And I hope you have many more for us in the future.
